Title: Free sound module?
Post by: offthewall on December 29, 2007, 02:55:51 PM
I posted this over at KVR expecting lots of answers, but I'm coming up with nothing useful!

I'm looking for a (vst)freeware sound module, on the same lines as Cubase USM. Just something to play general (GM style) sounds.
Looked through the KVR database and the only one that sounded right was Plugsound Ultimate Sound Bank, but that looks as if it's been discontinued!
Any ideas?
 ;)

mmmhh... I know Cubase USM but I don't recall anything similar for free.... :-\
There are many like NI Bandstand but I think they're all payware, let's see if something comes out...

I had a feeling that would be your response James, so I refrained from making pretty much the same suggestion :-X

In it's simplest form, a sound font can be regarded like a collection of pre-built 'voices'.

They are complex sample banks that the soundfont player scans when it gets the appropriate MIDI trigger. Want a different 'instrument' - switch soundfont. Good soundfonts with a good player will give different responses to different pitches and key velocities, just like a real instrument would.

I'm sure someone else could explain this better!

Yes ! a soundfont is like a bunch of samples all together. You load it on your Sounfont player and it acts like a VSTi
There's no difference

I use SFZ player

Chaos 12meg soundfont works well too.
I also like the sfz, but the absolute easiest way to use fonts is to buy an SBLive card (VERY cheap now, like $20)
This will work very easily for playing your GM sounds.
Then, when you want to improve them, you just customize your font.
There are really a lot of good soundfonts out there, James, and it's not hard to get the hang of using them.
