Who? Me?

This is an especially hard contest this month. We have to try to emulate another artist, but NOT do a cover of an existing song.

I've tried to do something in the style of Enya (she actually produces a lot of instrumental music as well as vocals). I'm not sure if it works, but I'm sure I'll soon be told. Even so, I'm rather pleased with the chord progression, and may well try to use it, or variations of it elsewhere.

C(2), Dm(1),Dm(2),Em(1),C(1),C(2),Dm(1),Bm(2),C(2),Dm(1),Em(2),F(1),Em(1),Bm(2),C(1)

The bracketed terms are the chord inversion.

Nice chordprogression going up in C
You took a litle risk with that Bm, Bdim (B-D-F) would have fitted in the major scale, but it sounds good. On the other hand that F# is part of the Lydian scale in C, so it is justified Smiley

Don't know if it sounds like Enya, but it is a nice track.

Folderol,

I really like the chord progressions of the synth pad sound,as well as the choir sound-and these elements of the song sound very much like Enya, but the wind instrument lead melody is very flat sounding & does not really seem to fit the theme too much. Also, the bass drum notes that sounds like a heart beat bother me quite a bit,as it does not belong there whatsoever.
Sorry to sound so harsh, but I think if you want to be more accurate to the theme & truly emulate Enya-the aformentioned areas could use re-working.

It's my firm opinion that if you give these areas more attention, this piece has the potential to be a very strong & competitve entry.

I honestly think that you have the capability to improve on this piece quite a bit & if you decide to do so,I very much look forward to hearing it. Smiley

Hi Elwood.

These are very valid points. The drum sounded OK when  started with just the smooth synth and lead, but as I added other parts, it got more out of place. It was useful for timing but I should probably have removed it.

The Lead instrument really should be an Irish bagpipe (Enya used that on quite a few of her earlier tracks), but I don't have such a thing! Nor have I heard any synthesised instrument that sounds anywhere near it, so I plumped for just a strong reed sound.

I can't change the contest entry now. Scoops immediately disqualifies anyone who tries to change a submission. However, I am continuing to work on a fuller version. I want to introduce an alternate melody between verses 2 & 3. I also want to improve the piano, both the sound ant the playing!

Hi Folderol
I don't know Enya very well but the atmosphere in your track seems very similar to the original. This month's theme is an exercise in style  Undecided

Hi Will,
I don't know if you have come across StringZ from www.krakli.co.uk
It has a preset called Northumbrian which can do a pretty mean 'pipes' sound with a little tweaking.

It was about where I normally seem to get :?

The competition is extremely fierce, so I'm just happy if I get in there at all.
