This is certainly one hell of a song  Shocked
I know allways some litle thing to say about a song, but here I'm speechless.
It's perfect  Roll Eyes, i can't think of any comment, beside that it is perfect
Even that bassline is good (personnal joke between Marc and me)

Nothing else to say; I'm listening for the 4th time here

+1

absolutely outstanding

I'm finding it very hard to believe you can improve on this!

Will,

I'm doing a re-mix of the guitars....and hoping for my giant Englishman (no, not you...the other giant Englishman) Daran to add a little spoken-word part before I do a final mixdown. (you can hear his stylish delivery in the MP3 below....also newly re-mastered)
The proposed lyrics: "Hell has no dominion." and  "We are innocent."
"Hell Has No Dominion" is the working title of the song, and I'm still liking it.

Great track, wonderful guitars and the vocals have a very warm sound, how were they recorded? Drums feel like they could be a tad punchier (although I was listening on headphones so that might be a wrong observation). Very cool atmosphere but a bit of a sudden ending. In any case, great stuff!

I am kind of wondering why it is in this thread though... Wink

Marc,

There is a spot in the song where a spoken-word lyric could sound very dramatic. Your vocoder vocal is very effective, and I wanted to try a couple of lines from Daran Whysall, my resident poet, in the mix. That MP3 is just an example of Daran's spectacular delivery.

The vocal recording was done in my little apartment. It's a Shure SM58 (hand-held) processed through my trusty Digitech RP12 which I use as a mic preamp. I have fashioned a preset called "vocal" Grin with some EQ and a noise gate that makes the SM58 sound good in most situations.

By the way, mixdown is going very slowly because I'm learning Ardour along the way, but it is sounding fabulous at the new 96000 Hz sampling rate wOO

Sounds very intrigueing - I can't wait to hear it. Some more lyric suggestions:

'I'll choose my own path...'
'Walking a fine line here...'
'Don't think you know me - don't think I'm giving up.'

Or stuff like that? Although being a resident poet he'll already have some ideas of his own here.

I'm getting a 'Shadow on a Wall' vibe here - very cool! Wink

Daran is very excited by the prospect, also!

Oren,

I heard that vocal work before and liked it then..and I can appreciate it
so much better now. Strictly awesome! The best I have heard.

Thanks for sharing about how you set up a 'vocal' patch..it gave me an idea.

When I do vocals, there is an amp setting that works well for me.there is some
nasty little amp noise that hitch-hikes along with it, but that is something I
actually *do* know how to deal with..so it works ok.

It never occurred to me that I might sit down and make a custom vocal channel on my amp,
mostly because I don't know how to.. but I am looking forward to the challenge of it. It
just hit me about a half hour after I read your post..like how cool would that be, eh??

Your work has always inspired me to reach for lovely sounds.

Wyatt

Thanks for commenting, L.R. This site has an amazing collection of talented individuals (look in the mirror, for example...), many of them already mature and capable with their skills. And it's getting better as we learn from each other.... Cool

Here is the final mix of our collaboration. Marc may choose to do his own mix also, just to take the song in that JX8P direction Grin.
I've taken the very best of Marc's spoken-word vocal contribution and the very best of Daran's vocal to give the song some more interest.
Levels are still not final - I think the guitar needs to come down a bit, particularly in spots where it tends be overbearing. Tonal qualities seem about right...

Recommendations?

Since we are talking about a mix of the masters of www.yourbestsound.com, I'll be nutpicking here  Wink
To anyone else I propably would say, great ! But I simply expect the best from you
So here we go, and mind you this are only my observations, take them with a grain of salt  Grin

- I think it isn't a matter of levels that should be improved. To my ears it's more a matter of reverb or type of reverb used. The difference of type of reverb on the solo guitar track and the keyboards track and drumtrack is to pronounced, I think. You can hear it best 3:30 where you play together with the piano and allso at 4:20. It's difficult to explain and as such probably even more difficult to fit...

- I'm not a drummer, but aren't the drumrolls (on the toms) around 4:55 running in the wrong sense in the stereo spectrum ? I would expect those to go from left to right

- The last one, and this is just personal and has nothing to do with the quality of the song. I don't like the vocal sample at 2:03, it shocks a bit propably due to the crackling noise that comes with it and IMHO it doesn't add much to the song. Mind you, this is difficult to judge, it shocked me only on the first listening of the song, on the next one I tought it wasn't that bad, because I knew it was comming. At 5:15 the vocals fit much better, and in the intro they are perfect.
