This month KVR contest has an open theme of *sad*.
As there is no time limit and covers are allowed, for a change, I decided to do a tune that I've wanted to record for a long time....but could never find an excuse!
This has always struck me as one of the saddest, melancholy tunes to come out of modern-day Ireland. It was written and originally performed by the great Finbar Furey, champion of the pipes and whistle. I met him a few times in the early 70's and he, and his brothers, had a profound influence on the way I listened to traditional style music.
This is my own translation of
The Lonesome Boatman.

Lovely song..great production..

Your whistle playing is very expressive.

I am also liking the acoustic guitar recording, and how
both instruments have a nice clear space.

Genuine sad song here, that's for sure.

Cool

I agree with Wyatt.

You did a fantastic job on not only the instruments but on the production itself. VERY PROFESSIONAL.

Regardless of what happens over at KVR this one is a winner for sure.

James,

The passion & skill of your performances-coupled with your impeccable knack for recording, bring so much atmosphere to this song, that I am deeply touched by this,as it's so immersive.
If my apartment were a boat,I would be the Lonesome Boatman,so I can relate to this song spiritually.

Thanks for sharing this lovely tune. Cry Cool

Cheers,

Thom

 Cool
Thanks for the kind comments, each.
The other reason it makes me *sad* is that I can't play the darn thing anywhere near as good as the great man!  Lips Sealed

Has that "handmade" feel. Folk music at its best.
