I have a Patrick Eggle Berlin Plus, and I'm using Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3 as a plugin.  Now recording the clean guitar is fine, and adding the VST plugin is fine, but as soon as I add any other VST effect - whether it be reverb, delay, etc it all goes "mushy/muddy" is the best way to describe it.  The Guitar Rig VST has effects built into it, which I turn off anyways as I would prefer to use the host program as its easier to see all fx on one screen, and I'm only using it for distortion / amp modelling.

I know of quite a few top artists who use it in the studio, so I know its not the guitar vst causing the problems.  Its especially problematic when using delay, and the track I'm doing needs a lot of delay on the guitar - using it to "play" extra notes.  I can't use the guitar VST's built in delay as it's not sync-able to the host prog (presonus Studio one pro), and I have tried it in Acid 7.0 and Reaper also - same result, the guitar loses all clarity and sounds nasty and cheap.  Its a damn expensive guitar, and damn expensive guitar VST so it's something I'm doing wrong.

If I record a clean sound with no FX (just use the guitar VST for amp modelling) and no delay etc its fine

Does anyone have a clue what I'm doing wrong?  Any help would be a major bonus!!

Oh, I use a Line 6 Toneport for input, if that helps

thanks in advance Wink

Did you put the reverb and/or delay on the aux bus ?
This way you can control how much is sended to your mix.
I would guess, if you get a mushy signal that you get the 100% wet signal on your out.

Wow!! that was a quick reply!  Grin

The Delay is an Insert, and I set the mix level within the VST.  Ill try setting up a FX bus, and sending to that instead - see what happens

thanks Wink

Hope you don't mind, but I'm sending you a HUGE hug over the interwebs  wOO

That worked perfectly  I created a seperate FX bus, and added the Delay as an insert on that, then routed the guitar signal through that - works like a charm, nice and clean.

Thank you SOOO much Wink

If you have a dedicated PC where you can do some experiments, an easy start is to install 64studio : http://www.64studio.com/
It's based on UBUNTU but tailored for the musician, you get everything out of the box and ready to run.
'Only' problem you could get is if the PC has a brand new soundcard which isn't supported yet, but the list of supported cards gets bigger every day.
