Yep, new laptop
Still looking at soundcard options.
...
... lots of hi-speed wires available!
I'll likely get a USB external M-Audio or such.  ...
I just want decent audio capabilities for the laptop, even stereo in/out will be fine.

In that case... wouldn't an external firewire box be a better choice ?
I have this one : http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FireWireSolo.html
A good 96 kHz interface with line in, guitar and mic pre-amp ?
Works smooth and gives good quality.

And, not of direct interest for you, but mayby for others, it works perfect under Linux with the freebob driver : http://freebob.sourceforge.net/index.php/Main_Page

That looks like a good candidate for my next one.

Your Digitech RP150 will make a useful pre-amp for electric instruments (or a high impedance mic), and hook up to your laptop with it's USB port. It will output 16/44.1 and 24/44.1.

Jimi Pocius has done some amazing productions with just his old laptop, Audacity, and no special soundcard:

An idea man!  I like it
Not stereo inputs though .. on that RP150

I'll probably go with an M-Audio USB device as 64 bit drivers seem to be maintained well there.
Firewire devices and 64 bit seem to be struggling lately..
