I posted at PG forum for some feedback on my first try at mixing live music.  I've gotten none so far...

I got my Firepod last week & set it up to record the trio I play in.

It was pretty neat! (yes I said neat)
I'm disappointed that the gain is not what I thought it would be, but made do & used my Crate mixer for the Shure SM58's (2)

Sytnhophone into inputs 1&2 (VL70m & XV2020)
Guitar into input 4 from Loren's Peavey line out.
Joe's Bass & Drum machine into input 5. (drum machine didn't produce enough volume alone so we did line out from the bass amp with the drum machine into it)
Vocals to input 7 panned (R) & 8 panned (L) via the Crate mixer.

Everything into PT11. What a great program!!!!

We recorded 6 songs. No overdubs, no 2nd takes. Just how we would play live. Just to see how it would come out.
We're going to use snippets of these on the web site. (since there are some glitches)

lorenjoe.com (this isn't the site where the songs are)

I'd be interested in any critiques of the mix. I didn't do too much...a little panning & some reverb.
5 band EQ, TripleComp, PG PeakLimit & Classic Master Limiter.

The songs, if anyone care to offer comments, are at the bottom of my music page.  mickemery.com

Thanks for everyone's help so far.

I enjoyed the song, good remakes of golden classics.
Summertime is realy funky, never heard a version like this.
Allso 'Isn't she lovely' is an grooving arrangement

In general I like how you perform the song, you realy do them in your way.

Can't comment on the mix, listening on pc speaker at the moment.

Went back to this, listening in the studio.
I real don't have a lot of remarks on the production

In Summertime i noticed at least one spot where the vox clipped. Next time it owuld be a good idea to record at a slightly lower level and then use a compressor. Or put a hardware compressor between the mic and the daw Smiley

Isn't she lovely , I hear a litle clash between the bass & the kickdrum. That bass hides the kickdrum. There a couple of tricks to avoid this:
- EQ obviously, but not easy with a bass like that one
- Slide the kickdrum a tiny litle bit to the left, so that it attacks just (ms) before the bass
- Sidechain compression
Allso, on the harmonica could benefit from a low pass filter which cut out the high freq'q, it yels a bit.
I would personnaly add a very slight distortion on it, to give it a bit.

Overall the production is good, a couple of details would make it even better

I hope this was usefull

I made a CD & went into my car to listen.  It seemed that the songs were quite bass-heavy, but it might be my stereo.  Did anyone hear it that way?

Hey, Mick!

What about your buddy Oren?  Grin I answered, didn't I? Where did we go wrong, man?  Cry

(In case my first message got lost in the shuffle:)

Yes, the bass is too loud.

Yes, everything else is peachy.

Knock 5dB off all frequencies below 200Hz on the electric bass, and call me in the morning.
(if that ain't sufficient, go for an extra 3dB cut at frequencies below 100Hz)

Doc Fisher

Kara, - he can't pan the kick drum, because the electric bass and drum machine were recorded on the same track. EQ time!  Wink

Hi Oren,
I actually posted that before I heard from you.

I was looking for specifics also.  Other than you & Kara, most posts were very general, or complimentary or about my interface.

I think I pressured myself since this is the first time, since Whipping Post, that I mixed with anyone else on the song.

I always look forward to - and appreciate your help.
You da' man!!

Thanks again,
Mick
