This is interesting. Reaper is a good sequencer (I have a licence for Windows), but it struggles a bit with my VSTi's. I'll try to have a look at this one of the next comming days...

Everybody has great respect for this new Reaper program. Is it , by definition, open-source?

Reaper isn't open source, but it is almost "free". You can use it for free, but if you like it, buy the licence. You have 2 type of licences, the non commercial licence is really cheap. You find more info on www.cockos.com or http://reaper.fm/purchase.php (only 39.95 dollars). Kara, you need Ubuntu to run Reaper (I'm using Suse), and since I don't have a spare empty PC at this moment... The link you provided is great with lot's of explanation. If someone else can have a look, i would be most interested what the result under Ubuntu is! I'm not sure you need Reaper, since Energy XT2 is also a great alternative. Moon

bearing in mind that ubuntu is based on debian, could you not bypass some of the steps by using 64studio (also debian based)? It already has a RT kernel, and is configured specifically for audio.

One again interesting link. Looks like Reaper can run under Linux. Ubuntu seems a good choice as Linux distro.

Yes interesting. But be aware that a standard Ubuntu distro is NOT the ideal solution for a DAW solution. Reason is that any standard linux distro is compiled with a standard kernel, for a DAW solution you need a 'real-time' kernel. It is possible to change the kernel in a distro but this goes above the knowledge of a linux beginner. Another solution is to choose the Ubuntu studio ( http://ubuntustudio.org/) distrubution which has that kernel. Folderoll makes a good point here, for a first configuration it is a good idea to choose something that is allready pre-configured for use as a daw k

I just went down to a small computer store to buy a 320gig external hard drive (to back up all those .wav files that need mastering), and the clerk is a Linux-only computer user. He recommended Ubuntu Studio, because of its real-time kernel... Yep!

Ha! These linux zealots creep in everywhere I've no experience with ubuntu studio, but would again suggest you get the cd (non install) versions of all the music-specific distros to see what you are most comfortable with. They all have their good and bad points. It's quite hard to change later on when you've begun to develop habits and customise the system - and I tell you, you WILL customise
