Well after a year of battling, I finally won a tribunal to get mobility benefit, which means I can get a car again and not be housebound 24/7!!

The DSS (govt dept) had so much faith in their case, they didn't even bother to turn up - took the 3 judges around 4 mins to decide in my favour Smiley

And now i'm over another bout of health related crap, going to try getting back into some tunage again.. so things are looking up all round.

Once the backdated money comes through... almost £3000, once I've bought car, insurance etc, I'm going to treat myself to a nice pair of powered monitors in the £100-£150 range, any suggestions?

Congrats, Paul !!!

I know what that battle is like ... I tried a couple of years back to get DLA and when I got the appeal forms I just couldn't believe the list if pure lies supplied by the original assessor !  I gave up because there was no way I could argue against that sort of 'put up job'.

Well done.

Hey
I'm happy to hear that, nice one mate..
My advice is don't get cheap monitors because as you get into your music more and more you'll wish you had bought a better pair.
If you're going to go with cheaper ones also treat your room, that will help.
Dynaudio or Adam would be my picks but you can also look at:
KRK,(seems to be very popular)Tannoy,Alesis,Yamaha and JBL.
You can always get a nice pair of Sennheiser headphones instead as an alternative.
Cheers

Great news Paul. Of course it would be nice not to need the mobility allowance, but if you need it, you need it, and the buggers should stop trying to make things harder.

P.S.
In future, maybe you should develop a drink and drugs habit and start talking with an Eastern European Accent Wink

Unfortunately budget monitors are all I'll be able to go for once Ive got a car etc, and treating the room is out, as I'm just in a 1 bedroom apartment and music is done in my living room.

The speakers I use at the moment are just sony speakers from a Hi-Fi, being powered by an ancient Cambridge Audio amp that cost me about £70, approx 13 years ago, so anything will be a step upwards at the moment.

Once I'm eventually working again, I'm looking for a 2 bedroom place, and the spare bedroom will be a dedicated music space... Smiley

Paul,

I'm delighted that justice was done,as acquiring any sort of disability benefits is a tough nut to crack! Cool It took me two years to be awarded my disability,as I was rejected the first time and had to retain the services of a lawyer the second time around.

My attorney took 30% of my back disability pay,but I was still left with enough to get my studio under way and man, what a beautiful feeling that was!

As for the monitor thing,it's a bit tough to suggest a good recommendation, since we are in different countries(as otherwise,I could pick quite a few different monitors off the top of my head and recite exactly how much they all cost).

I'll begin by saying, that since your budget does not allow room treatment...you could always use some large picture frames and cover them with a thick cloth(this is especially effective for taming the bass turbulence from a rear-ported monitor).

In terms of powered monitors,I would steer clear of Alesis altogether,as their internal amps are noisy & weak in volume.Yamaha monitors in this price range are good to avoid and their monitors are overpriced anyhow.

The JBL 2300 series monitors may be in your price range(or slightly beyond it) and I think that's something worth looking into(but I've never heard them myself).
As for the KRK's...well...the previous Rokit series were dreadful, but the 8" ones were usable.I haven't heard the updated Rokit series,so perhaps they've improved upon them....though I imagine that the KRK Rokit 5" monitors are going to be very weak in the low end.

However though,it may all depend on whether or not you want front,or rear ported designs-but in the 5" monitor size, the differences are neglidgeable,as the sonic characteristics are virtually indistinguishable,it terms of port turbulence.
It's really difficult to find monitors with a usable low end,but I have found that M-Audio is the absolute best in the budget arena and I recently bought the BX8a Deluxes(got a super deal on them),as I paid $359 (USD) for the pair and I am overjoyed with them!

There's plenty of thump to them(but room treatment is a must)...so in your situation,my best recommendation to you, would be the smaller M-Audio's...particularly the BX5a Deluxes.

The inability to do room treatment isn't so much budget, as with my music recording space also being the living room, my girlfriend might disagree.... along the lines of ... "No F**** way!!", especially as one 1/2 of the living room contains 3 guitars, 1 bass, 2 keyboards, 6ft computer desk covered in wires and  studio stuff, another smaller computer desk, Mic stand.  She's already unhappy about the guitars being out all the time, but with my "baby" costing over £1000 and having an ebony fingerboard and being extremely sensetive to temperature no way is it going in a cold cupboard in the hall lol

I had actually been thinking about M-Audio monitors, as they do look quite good for the money.  I'm lucky that we have extremely thick concrete walls/floors here so sound leakage bothering neighbours isn't really a concern (plus the old lady downstairs is deaf as a post - always a good thing when you have a muso for a neighbour!!)

Once the back money comes through, 1st priority is a car, then off to the city... we are lucky to have 2 great music/studio stores in Newcastle, with another one just up the coast too.

On a slightly related note: I've just been accepted as a "mystery shopper" for an organisation called "Attitude is Everything" who specialise in helping venues/festivals provide access/facilities etc for disabled music lovers.  If I spot a gig I want to attend, I run it past them and if they OK it, after the gig I write a report on facilities, wheelchair access, staff attitudes etc and they reimburse me for the price of ticket + travel.

So that will be Skunk Anansie & Madness in November, Hawkwind in December Smiley
