Title: August KVR - and beyond!
Post by: folderol on August 07, 2013, 09:29:04 PM
I've finally been able to enter the competition again!

This track is as long as the rules allow - hence it stops rather abruptly, but it is something that I'm definitely going to develop as and when I get time :)

Indeed, it does encourage one to take a large, luxurious, languid lungful... ;D

To state the blatantly obvious,it seriously needs to be all condensed down & if done so properly,I think the length that you're allotted will work fine.

Beautiful pad sound & a nice beginning. 8)

Thanks for listening guys.

The entry has been made to KVR so that one can't change.

Thom, I'm a bit puzzled about why (or how) you think it should be compressed. This is intended to be a very slow, langid (as Oren put it) chill-out, in the style that Kitaro uses quite a lot.

In any case, I felt it had a lot of room to 'grow' and have done a lot more work this last couple of days. It is now slightly over 5 minutes long. I've also dropped the key from F to E. A final experiment was to add a very slow soft, almost subliminal drum beat that fades in and out through the piece.

I'll post just an mp3 for now. It's not totally fixed yet :P

Yup - going places  ;D

Perhaps a more "breathy" instrument for the melody line would contribute to the theme, and the mood...?

This is really good Will!

I agree with Oren that a more “breathy” instrument might sound a little better.

Another suggestion might be to shorten the intro.  IMHO it is very long.  You set up the lead well but I think it took to much time to do so.  Maybe chopping off 30-60 minutes might sound better, don't know.

Thanks again guys.

I did actually try a breathy lead sound - several in fact - but especially later on, the melody tended to disappear into the background pads. However...

I've had another look at this, and added a quiet, slightly delayed sound an octave down, and panned slightly to the left. The fact that this sometimes disappears works rather well :)

I'm very reluctant to shorten the intro. To me it's an important mood setting, as well as a slow build up of the pads. Once again with further thought I've added a new quiet sound which gives more movement to the intro, then fades out completely when the melody gets under way.

I'm trying to be very subtle about any changes I make. I'm especially fond of this one and don't want to risk screwing it up!

Please have another listen.

Right back on track, to my taste!  :-

Kitaro is going to be so jealous... :D

A SUPER BIG +1

This is a very peaceful, well-written and performed piece of music.

Mario,

Love the lead sound in this tune! 8)About the intro..at the length the tune is now,I think the intro's duration is fine...provided that there is some miniscule accents added,to keep the listener engaged.

As nice as the chord progressions are,a 1:28 of intro is a significant chunk of the tune & warrants a bit of "dressing" if you will(in my opinion),to make the journey through the intro more enticing.

Just offering my thoughts on it,as that's how I would instinctually approach a song...but to each his own.

Thank you very much. This one became 'special' quite early on, so I'm really pleased with the way it worked out and that people like it so much.
