Title: 4beats for Moon
Post by: kara on January 07, 2011, 02:59:30 PM
This week it was my brothers (Moon) birthday.
As some of you already know, we have a different style of music and never agree  ;D

I promised to a song which enters in his criteria :
- It has to be dance music
- Don't complicate it = no jazz tricks :)
- Not longer then 3 min 30
- Put variation in it
- Completely electronic

As you can see, that's about everything I don't do normally...   :-\

The title is 4 beats for Moon
It starts pretty simple , first 16 bars are for a DJ to BPM sync and mix it in, after that it deploys.

If there is one thing I learned from this song, it's extremely complicate to mix....
Here is the damage done  ;D

- A total of 28 track each with a channel EQ
- 22 inserts FX used
- 4 AUX busses with a total of 8 FX
- 4 insert FX on the Master bus

Don't know how much time I will need to recover from this....
Happy birthday Moon  :-

I preferred the first half of this tune,as I lost interest in it later on.There are some interesting elements in this song, but a bass line would have been nice.
More of a punchy thump to the drum track would have rounded out this tune better also.

Enjoy your b-day Moon.  8)

This is not a style I'm usually very keen on, but I enjoyed this. I don't expect much development in such a style, which depends on beat more than anything else so I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of variation you used.

I have only recently learned to enjoy this style of composition/production. There is some really bad music written in this style, and some very creative and musical examples of the genre.
"4beats for Moon" is in the second category...(http://serve.mysmiley.net/jumping/jumping0040.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net)

I like this a lot.

I especially liked the tone, rhythm and lead synth work you did around the basic beat.  Very good indeed.

PS – Happy birthday Moon!

Here is the new and perhaps final version.

A lot of things have changed.
- Drumsounds : more punchy, on the advise of Thom (especially the kick)
- Added a sub bass-line, also on the advise of Thom, it starts simple at verse 1 and is developed at verse 2.
- Moon didn't like my bridge, actually he doesn't like when there is a key change in a bridge, so I've completely redone it, in the same key this time.
- The whole rhythm section after the bridge has be redone, to give it more drive.

This should be the final version, except if you have remarks on the mix, which I'm willing to take in account. It is very complicated to make a mix like this, much more work then I expected. The whole song has a total of 38 tracks (see screenshot)!
If you don't hear any errors in the mix, the song will be send to a friend of me, who is a professional DJ in Belgium. I hope he will include it in his set. I know  I'll have to make it longer for him, club tracks are usually at least 6 minutes, but I prefer to ask him first how to develop it.

Regarding the mix - excellent!

For my taste, your original version is better. It has a delicacy - and an artistic sensibility - that reflects your individual approach to music much more faithfully than this new one.  More interesting, more enjoyable, more original... 8)

I agree with you. But the song was written for Moon, so I had to respect his taste and opinion.
That was the mission.

Yes, the mix is excellent.  I hope Moon likes it!

Although I prefer the first version this version sounds more like a club’s dance music, at least based on my very limited knowledge of dance music. Both versions, although very different, are top-notch pieces of music.

Great work Kara.

Nice sounds...I prefer the second personally...I think it sounds more punchy, although still quite soft compared to what I listen to
