In the early 1970s two friends and myself used to play C&W, folk, and easy listening songs. Barrie played bass guitar, I alternated between rhythm guitar and a portable (well, lugable) electronic organ and Ray mostly played lead guitar. Both Barrie and I were the singers too. One of Ray's favourites was Forty Shades of Green, and it was very popular at the venues we played.
Work and such took us in different directions, but we kept loosely in touch. Sadly, we lost Barrie in the early 1980s, and then later Ray too. Unfortunately, we didn't have decent recording kit in those days, and over the years the few I did have disappeared. Mentioning this to someone I collaborate with from time-to-time. He hadn't heard of Forty Shades, and was quite shocked when I told him it was written by Johnny Cash! Anyway, we put our heads together and this is what we came up with - for me it's a bit of a tribute to my lost friends.
