Title: Contest spinoff
Post by: offthewall on September 23, 2008, 05:32:32 PM
After entering this song for the contest, composed around the supplied drumloop, I decided to continue with the production of it in a different direction, ever mindfull of criticisms and comments from other members here.  :-*
First off I wanted to keep the original format of *one take recording*.
I discarded the drumloop and electric guitar altogether.  I replaced these with a bass and mandolin, again recorded in one take each.
I then remixed the whole thing to suit the new instrumentation.
This is
The Autumn Equinox (unplugged).

Beter and better :)

Only comment - I'd have liked the Bass to be more prominent.

Although I think you did a great job by slowing down the drum loop in your contest entry, I must admit that this version sounds way better  ;)
Instruments fit well together and there's that authentic mediaeval live feeling.
Good placing of the instruments in the space, I like how that mandolin sits behind the others.
Good ending too, original

This one was certainly worth the effort of doing a new version.

Again, thanks for comments.
I enter the contest not for prizes. They are of little interest to me, really.
However, to me the whole contest issue is about being given a challenge and rising to that.
To do something new that you would not have done if you had not been challenged.

This has been proven, to me, in this case.
It was only as an afterthought that I actually decided to work with this theme. The drumloop gave me the backbone of the composition and inspired the idea.
After taking the composition away from the original conception I was able to improve on it.
This is how I like to learn.  Attempting a new venture then taking in criticism from ones peers to make improvements.
Kara-moon is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best music site in the world.
Thank you all.  :;

Well said.

Your further interpretation of the song proved the validity of this approach.

Shall we dub you "One Take Fraser"? ;)

At this moment in time, that is definitely a suitable moniker, longhair.
I'm truly into the spirit of OneTake.  8)

I really like what you've done with this, James.

More room for each instrument makes them all
very present and important.

Lovely composition and top rate production bro.

Wooow !  :o
much more 'organic' (lacking a better word...)
getting rid of the loop leaves more room for all the subtle expressiveness of each instrument
Great !

Cheers

Really enjoyable, I didn't hear the other versions, bit this one sounds great to me.

Love the flute playing, moves over the track freely and keeps it interesting.

The only thing that IMHO could be improved is the end; the dialogue between the bass and banjo sounds a bit odd to me... maybe work a bit on the "counterpoint" lines there  ;)
