Title: Hurting and Numb
Post by: rharv on May 01, 2007, 11:08:56 PM
Since Kara wanted something a little harder rock, and I AM working on simpletonguru masters, this seems like as good a place as any to get opinions on a new mix.
(It's even newer than the one I sent you Oren)
We really want a full production sound on this- any helpful hints?

All done in Powertracks Pro Audio, of course.

I'm on a PC at the moment with crappy speaker, will listen to it this evening...

Bob,

I'm comparing the previous version on .WAV with this one on MP3...not fair, but -

They are very similar in terms of punch and detail, which means #2 must be much better because it's only a compressed file...does this help? ::)

Awsome tune, and the bass player's got it goin' on!

Oren.

Thanks, Oren
I think this one will be a keeper. Only thing I've heard is 'wanting' in this one is the snare, but those that said that also said it's not worth changing for it (afraid it will affect something else in the mix).

Hi Bob,

..just had my third run at it this morning..I wanted to listen again because of what you said about the snares..for me the only time I really noticed the snare coming up light, was at a point where increasing the snare likely would have overshadowed the vocal ..for my taste, I like the way it is now.

..I didn't hear a 'before' track on this, but this one is very easy to listen to..easy to track with any part I want to focus on..it comes to me so I don't have to reach to 'get-it'..and I was able to roam around in it effortlessly.   I'd call it a wrap.

I've noticed you hanging around there again; Powertracks is a great tool.
Thanks for the comments on the song. It took me a long time to find a 'sound' for these recordings, but I think I'm homing in on it.

Hi rharv
Great rocking track, I like it, it sounds really good.
The vocals are really excellent, very aggressive singing style, the guitars are well done.
I don't like the fade out in the end, anyway this is a cool song

Cheers

Thanks a bunch. The fadeout was in the recording sent to me to master; each track was faded. I thought the fade was too fast so I put a fade on the mixxed down wave starting earlier and going from 100% to 40% then let his fade take over from 40% on out.  I usually try to find another way to end songs myself.

I know Barry worked very hard on all the vocals, I'll pass your compliments along.
Actually we all have worked pretty hard on this CD.

Anyone interested in seeing the band can go to http://www.simpletonguru.com (http://www.simpletonguru.com) I think we have a pretty nice site there for a (so far) small time band..

A very nice site you have, Bob, thanks for the link.
Very clean design, looks very professional.

You talk about mastering in your post. Does that mean that you actually master tracks for other artists ?
I'm good enough at mixing but mastering is out of my domain.

I have mastered for a couple bands and our own CD. It's not what I do for a living, but I enjoy it.
Thanks for the comments on the site.

Bob.  Good on ya Mate.  Is it supposed to be 21 seconds long?  Like the crawly feeling it has.  Who's singing?  Barry?

Yep, Barry is singing. I don't understand the 21 second part though (?)..

Thanks for the comments Mario, however now I can tell you've never been to our site!  This song auto-plays when you get there.
You may enjoy the site- it's one of the two projects I'm involved in  and they try to be bery professional in the product and presentation.
 http://www.simpletonguru.com
(It's always in my signature at every forum)

I am remastering the recent CD this project recorded due to some comments they have received from other recording reviews. It's improving greatly.
I'll put another couple up soon.  I'm waiting to see if I am done with them yet..the powers that be are discussing it.
The band went for a raw, live sound they could recreate easily in the shows. Now we are trying to make them as 'produced' as we can. (I say we- I mean me and the mouse on the mousepad..)

Bob, I’ve actually been to your site before but I never had my speakers on!

I did go back today with them on and I was pleasantly surprised.  All of your songs sounded fantastic and all were very professional sounding.  You should be very proud of this!

Also the site presentation was also top notch.  It’s one of the best band sites I’ve seen - MarioD

Hey Bob, can't download your last two tunes here...what a surprise, eh? But, I did visit your site. Well done. And I loved the auto-play song there...a nice bit of edge to your band's music....works very well for me  ;)

That has to be frustrating. Not being able to download when you want to.
I can send mp3's thru email if you like, but I don't know if that would work either!
It would be the same file, or I could change the file format if we could just figure out why you can't download some things.
Thanks for visiting our site.

Hmmm.

I was instantly reminded of The Nashville *** and Tobacco Road :)

It's a bit too raw and heavy for my tastes these days, but you've hit the style right on the button!
