Title: Wyatt tribute?
Post by: offthewall on May 17, 2010, 10:48:26 PM
If anyone wants to contribute to a tribute thread .... I'll kick it off with this one.

About a year ago I got this e-mail from Wyatt with an mp3 demo of the song :

I didn't hear from the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame today, so I am guessing I did not win the songwriting contest.
There were 180 entries, but I still felt like I had a chance.
I wrote it in a day.. recorded the tracks one shot and produced it pretty much exactly the way I had planned to perform it if I had won.. me and a drummer and a rhythm guitar player.
Oh well.. that’s all right.. I got a good song out of the deal.

What do you say we have the Elderly Brothers take it on their world tour?

Let me know what you think of it.

Listening to it I could just hear an acoustic guitar line, and a bass part.
Anytime you want to give it a spin just let me know.

Sounds like a great idea to me.. as soon as I catch up on lots of unfinished business.

I just dug this out and finished it off.
I only had the mp3 demo to work with so there are many 'rough edges', but I feel that this is one of those moments which truly shows a song-writing genius.

That's our man... :-*
It takes a lot of gumption to write a "pro-war love song" in this day and age. Kevin was not afraid of controversy.
 It's good to hear his voice.

I'll dig around and try to find something from his harmonica days.

WOW!  This brought tears to my eyes!

Kevin and I have some very good email conversations.  Although I never met him I felt like I’ve known him all of my life.  I will miss him!

Ps - super job on the song James.

Here are two from Kevin's "synthetic period" - he was just coming into his own with software synths and sequencers.
I was hoping he'd come back from Mexico and blow us away... :-\

In mp3, as he sent them to me: "Restitution"...

In the spirit of paying tribute to our dear friend,I have been working on a song dedicated to him and I've already ran it by Oren.I am very fond of the idea of making it a community song, inviting anyone who wants to join in on it.
That being said,I will deliver everything individually to those who want to chime in vocally,& instrumentally and I've attached a MP3 preview of what I've done on my end.
Depending on how many come on board, the song may not be long enough to include everything that they may want to add,so I could extend it and alternately, anyone here is welcome to lengthen it any way they see fit with the individual tracks I'll provide to them.

Liquid Silver
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All the things we arrange, rests in the hands of fate
Tomorrow is promised to no one...so we scramble to scheme, before it's too late

Locked in the pain of our friend's demise..amazed by the surprise,of life's compromise

Gazing at the sky, wondering why...trying to look past what's behind our eyes
We then fill in the holes with music in our souls
Remembering our friend with every string & key we hold

Reflecting on how he made our lives more whole....

In spite of how unwell he was, he never stopped growing did he?

@Thom
I like what you have here so far, don't know if I can add anything but I'll certainly give it plenty of thought.

James,

Your collab with Wyatt has an exquisite "Crosby Stills & Nash" ring to it....priceless!
8)

Oren,

With regard to Wyatt's synthetic period, his fusion of guitars & genre's with synthesizers was the most creative & unique and for someone who was fresh to the synth game....like a fish to water!

@Will,

Even the most minimal contribution is fine...such as a couple of lyrical lines,a synth later or to..etc.,.

Let me know....

Thanks,

Thom

On a trip down memory lane....I went back to one of the first posts Wyatt ever put up,which had a link to one of Oren's web areas & listened through Wyatt's uploads there.
At which time,I came across a tune called Madrigal-2...it was so brilliantly conceived & beautiful, that I wanted to add some of my touches to it.
Since I did not have the option of downloading his song,I took the initiative to record his music by running two audio cables directly from my audio interface as the music was streaming and I recorded it into my Tascam.
I then exported the song into my Presonus DAW.
I added a bass track & a slight hint of synth, but since Wyatt's track was cut & pasted together in several increments,so I had to record in real time,in an attempt to blend in.....so please forgive the timing errors.

Thom,
your 'Liquid Silver' is stirring some 'guitarism' in my old fingers, my friend.

I think I may contribute, in time ....  ::)

Loads of emotions flying about at the moment  :'(

As this was one of the last songs we did together I am moving it from the Review section to over here, so as to make it more public.
