Title: CMOS battery failure Post by: Oren on May 03, 2011, 05:32:38 PM This is a follow-up to folderol's topic regarding strange computer symptoms that result from a weakening CMOS memory battery.
Strange computer performance began to crop up here, with no apparent cause. Software that normally runs flawlessly began to get glitchy or crash altogether. Sometimes the operating system would not load on the first try. Unlike a Windows user, I had no reason to suspect a clogged pre-fetch registry, a fragmented hard-drive, a faulty update, or the possibility of virus/malware activity. Both my computers run on PureDyne - a music-specific Linux operating system from the Netherlands. So, I removed the CMOS battery from both my computers, walked down to the local computer shop, and bought two fresh, shiny coin-shaped discs (the batteries). Back home, I popped the new batteries back in each computer, blew out all the dust, wiped off the computer cases, and fired each one up in turn. Because I had removed the old batteries (yeah, I know... not too bright :-[ :D) for an extended period of time, I had to re-set the motherboard BIOS settings to their default values. Then - business as usual. Fast, solid, reliable performance, once again... O0 |
