It required a lot of work on my part-to come up with a drum track that I felt would gel with this tune,& take after take,I finally settled on this......

Thom, I'm experiencing some distortion and tonal weirdness in the new version that is not apparent in the original. Am I the only one hearing this?

Oren,
The tonal anomalies that your referring to are the result of Dan's bass instrument & my efforts to bring more clarity to Mario's tracks....I'll explain....There are a couple of bass notes that Dan had played,in which one note's decay continued on into the following note,so there are two notes ringing out sustain at the same time, causing the grungy-distorted-like sound.I think this "tonal weirdness",was due to a combination of the way Dan was playing and the worn out bass strings on his instrument maybe?I did not notice was was happening in the bass track in Mario's version of this tune, but it became very evident when Mario sent me the tracks individually. The sonic characteristics of Dan's bass line became even more obvious when I brightened up Dan''s tracks with some EQ tweaks,as I wanted to make all of the tracks in my version equal,in fidelity.Dan's bass track made it very difficult for me to mix,as it left me with little headroom to work with and as such,I had to be careful of how much low end was present in my drum tracks.I really had to walk on egg-shells in this mix,but I liked the challenge. -Thom

Thom, I know what you're saying... Sometimes an uneasy compromise is the best you can do. Such is life...

Thom, this is a very interesting approach to this song. First let me say that I like this a lot. I love your synth additions. They added a lot. The percussion was also good. It took the song in another direction than when what I had envisioned when I started it. That’s NOT a bad thing, just a DIFFERENT thing. Each of us approaches music from a different angle.
Personally I liked the minimal percussion approach better, but not necessarily with my conga sounds. Although this sounded very good I think I would like it with less percussion. Now DON’T get me wrong. This has NOTHING to do with your musicianship, it just a PERSONAL thing and others may not agree with me.
Also, IMHO, any song without distortion is better than a song with distortion, especially if the song without distortion sounds ok to begin with. Again, that is just me.
Good work here Thom.

Mario,
I suspected that you might not care for the extra percussion(but that's quite alright),as I just went with my gut and just went with the flow of things. As for the "distortion"...well,I don't agree with this,as there was no distortion present-but rather,it was the sound of sustained bass notes that should have been muted,as well as the sound of loose bass strings buzzing.Because of this,I made certain that the dB level of this track was well within the limits. No offense intended towards your friend Dan,as I am just voicing my observations, after having the opportunity to listen to Dan's bass track in isolation.I'm glad you liked this version for what it is, and thanks for the comments. -Thom
