This isn't really my scene, but it's fascinating nevertheless.

It's also quite long!

Yep, I know this quy since quite some time.
He is pretty popular in the live electro scene. And I must admit that he is good.
In his setup he uses primarily groove boxes, like the korg electribe.

Now for the sake of a litle debate, a litle question...
Do you consider this as a live musician ? Or is it musician or a DJ without records ?

Curious what you think of this.

Although not my thing I must say he is good at what he does.

My definition of a musician is one who plays a musical instrument (note  include the voice as a musical instrument). I did not see a musical instrument here that he was actually playing. I know I’m old school.

I would call him a sound manipulator.  He manipulates sound by using playback machines/computers.

For instance if one has a keyboard and come up with some new patches for it he is a sound manipulator.  However if he then plays the keyboard or plays back that sound while playing another musical instrument then be comes a musician.

Just my thoughts.  I’m sure others may disagree.

What if he records (=plays himself) a loop in his studio and then triggers that loop on a live performance ?
Which is what he does actually...

Then he makes me look like a fool  Angry Angry Wink

If one does play and record loops as you have mentioned then one is indeed a musician.

To me, he is a musician.

The key issue is that he is interacting with his instruments to dynamically produce the sounds and rhythms he wants. In a sense he is doubly a musician because he is creating his sounds and loops on-the-fly, listening to get the effect he wants, then using them in his arrangement. Even then the loops are not static, because he further adjusts them though his compositions.

Having said that, it is not music I'd want to hear a lot of Wink

I would say, that even your typical d.j. is a musician,to some extent,as it requires arrangement skills -which in of itself is creative,as well as having a sense of rythym.
D.j's are simililar to a conductor in an orchestra & this particular fellow is orchestrating quite a bit-all at one time...exceptionally well.
I of course, like dance music, but this guy's stuff is not really my thing,as it's more noise than melody & I just could not sit through almost 40 minutes off this stuff-ouch! Tongue
