I remember Moon talking to me about a all in one Linux DAW solution.

I would be interested to know what the conclusions on this where.

So a full DAW under Linux is it possible yet ?

A complete music studio under Linux? Yep, it is possible. Check out http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may05/articles/studiotogo.htm or go to the fervent software homepage www.studio-to-go.com

My experiences? Well, to be honest, I was very eager to try out the soft. I bought a license, downloaded the cd image file, and made the bootable cd. Than, I tried it out. First on my DAW PC. Results... no boot ! OK, I have an EMU 1820m sound card in there which by default is not supported. Luckely I have a second PC so second try...

This time I had more luck, booting was no problem. Launching software, no problem. Hearing sounds... well something seemed to work, and other didn't seem to work. Again, the hardware issue came across. So, again dissapointed.

Third try, on my laptop. This probably wouldn't work anyway, but hey, let's give it a try. Booting seemed to work, launching software seemed to work. But again, when trying to get sound of the PC, some things seemed to be working and others didn't.

Next step? I still have an older DMX sounf card from terratec which seems to be fully supported. But than I need to rebuild a PC. I just don't have the time wright know, but who knows? That would probably give better results.

About the quality of the software? Well, let's be honest, Linux developpers still have a long way cathing up to do.

Conclusion: I'm not convinced: hardware support is limited, software still needs improvement. In theory a complete studio setup on a linux bootable CD is possible though, but the product still needs to grow. So keep watching out products like Studio To Go !

Interesting, there was once an article about using Linux for music creation in Computer Music, I'm not convice (plus, I'm a FL Studio addict which doesn't have any equivalent anywhere on any platform).

Here's one that is a live boot as well, but it's free by default and looks pretty decent.
I haven't tried it and am probably better off steering clear of linux because it usually just ends up in wasting time.

Yes I know the feeling..
In theory you could build a complete studio under Linux, there are some pretty good software packages out there
like Rosegarden, Ardour, MMA,... but the 'problem' is that it just doesn't work out of the box.
And it IS different from windows, just as an example, understanding the jack connection panel is a
investment in time on it own.

I've played a bit with Studio on the Go and it did work, at a certain moment I had 8 tracks and suddenly no sound
anymore... Jack stopped because he was out of sync. But it wasn't easy to find out how solve do it.

And my opinion is that a musician should spend time on making music and not on wasting time with technology bugs.
After all I'm the one here who has a hardware midi sequencer and a hardware multi track audio recorder.
I use the PC only for some basic layout work, where I use the excellent MMA sotware and in the end of the
production chain, to pre-master the track.

Not everybody works that way, I know that Moon has a complete PC based studio.

But in the end, what's the difference? Did you know that Korg Oasys is in fact a PC running on LINUX ? YES IT IS !!!
Did you already have a look at www.openlabs.com ? The OPENSYNTH NEKO's are in fact no more than a PC, but man, just have a look at the gear: it doesn't look like a pc to me  Shocked

The difference between DAW saftware based gear and real synth/music gear is getting very blur. In the end, it is not the gear that matters... but what you are doing wiht it ! Wink

Just thought I'd bring this up-to-date Smiley

Version 2 of 64studio is now out. This is available as 64 or 32 bit, full install or live CD.

I'm in the process of downloading this myself, but already know that the interim upgrade from V1.0 works very well on 3 totally different machines. One is a dual core 64bit machine with an Maudio 2496 card, another is a single 64bit with on-motherboard sound and graphics. and the last is 32bit with an oldish blaster-esque sound card. None of these is a laptop.

Keep us posted folderoll

I'm very interested in a DAW on linux and I know Moon is too.
It would be interesting to have some feedback on this by somebody who knows Linux like you do.
