Title: I Only Have Eyes for You
Post by: MarioD on August 17, 2007, 02:42:44 PM
This is a slightly different version than I uploaded on the PGMusic site.  I’ve added some effects, redid the sax part and remixed the song.

I hope you like it.

Constructive criticism is always welcomed - MarioD

o boy do I love that style, I could listen to those songs the whole day.

Constructive criticism  :-\
I'm married with a sax playing lady  ::) When she heard the first sax riff, she said to me 'yikes... sounds like a sax player running after a bus he missed'  ;D
Now, my lady is Breton (basically the same as Celtic) and those people are know for there strait forward expressions, which you have to take with a bit of pragmatism...
But I must say that I agree somehow with here, all other sax riffs are very smooth and fit perfectly well with the song, but that first one... well , you decide

Mario,

You and Mick are in the running for coolest synthetic sax sound. Your phrasing and smooth execution bring the performance to life. Good guitar, too!

How's your flute chops  ;D ?

Oren.

Kara, that is the kind of constructive criticism I’m looking for.  One can’t move forward it one doesn’t know what’s right or wrong!

I’m glad you and her brought this out.  I had a lot of sax fills in the song; I have a propensity to add a lot of stuff to my songs, then I sift and sort everything down to the final cut.   I originally had taken out all of the sax rifts.  Then I decided to leave just this one. Believe it or not it was the best one!  I shouldn’t have second-guessed myself!

If you want I’ll send it up without the first sax rift – MarioD

PS – Tell you lady thanx!

Good idea, why don't you a smooth one like in the rest of the song

Mick wins that one hands down!  He’s a sax player.  I’m a guitarist trying to emulate a sax player.  BIG difference.

Actually I’ve done a lot more flute leads than sax leads!  I’m a big fan of Herbie Mann.

Thanx Oren - MarioD

This is a very smooth, full arrangement. Excellent guitar work, well toned background choir and all the other 'detail' fit in extremely well. I wouldn't know much about sax playing but it sounds good to my uneducated ears.

As a musician friend once said:
Two things worth gold are a tame guitarist, and a sedate drummer :)

Although I’ve been told to turn it up onstage I’m not sure about a tame guitarist!

The only sedate drummer I’ve ever seen was a box that had “rhythm king” stamped on it  ;D

Thanx for listening - MarioD

Hello,

I've always loved this song & I must say this is the only version I have ever heard
(aside from the original),that I really like & I am very enchanted by it. 8)

Although the sax was played well,I have heard better synthetic sax sounds & a better sample of a sax synth sound would really do this song justice,I think.

Aside from that,I really enjoyed this song. :)

Thanx Elwood, that was very kind.  I’m really encouraged by this!

You’re right about the sax.  It was a free soundfont!  But it was the best fit that I had.

SO, if anyone wants to add a better sax part feel free to sent me a PM.  I’ll send you a MP3 sans the sax and you can polish it off - MarioD

Mario,

Hmm..I think the technical term is, "stinkin' Excellent" !!

That is simply beautiful guitar playing..and I'm a guitar player.

Hey man, Chet would have been proud of you.

Seriously..

Hi Mario.  The breathy alto sax sounds really good in most cases.  But the phrasing leaves a lttle.  Why don't you try it again but use the tenor sax.  It has great vibrato and is very clear.

Back to my comment about the alto.  It sounds like the first parts of the notes are being pumped out, for lack of a better description, on every lick.  It never comes into the parts smoothly.  The first notes are always emphisized.  Mine does exactly the same thing.  I use the Chaos version.  Has a very nice breathy sax.  But still has that pumped out sound on the first notes.

Again, try it with the tenor sax.

Thanx Russ.  Although it is a good idea using a Tenor Sax I have a better solution.  One of the kind folks on these forums had volunteered to add some real horn playing for me!  It’s going to take a little time but it will sound much better I am sure.

Thanx for listening - MarioD

Gotta love this place!
Have fun Mario. Share the new improved version with us.  I was going to offer a sax from the Roland sampleset, but you went one better!
Never be afraid to ask here- there are lots of people willing to collab on just about anything.
