Title: collab results: Evermore
Post by: ToneCarver on March 12, 2007, 03:53:20 AM
Hi,

My first post here is "Evermore", a collaboration with some folks from the Cakewalk forum. Not sure what genre this is  .. sort of a dreamy piece. Comments, feedback, critiques and observations warmly welcomed and much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Bill & Welcome to the Music Auditorium  8)

Nice relaxing piece with a little oriental taste. I suspect some Chineekong instruments in there, no ?
Not an easy composition, you hear the work that went into this one !
I really enjoyed listening to this one, thanks for sharing.

Kara

Hi Kara,

Thanks for the comments. The instruments in there are a mix of rompler, synth, bass, acoustic guitar and electric guitar. Not sure if there are any Chineekong samples in there or not (just can't recall !). Glad you enjoyed the piece.

Thanks for hosting this forum too, much appreciated.

Bill

Nice free flowing tune. Enjoyed it. Well played and some nice sounds.

The fretless bass didn't really appeal to me however, soundwise that is. Maybe a bit too middish?

Martin E,

Thanks for the listen and the encouragement. The fretless was played and recorded well so if it does not come across right it would surely be due to my mixing skills, or lack thereof. Thanks for the feedback. Glad you enjoyed the piece.

There  is a nice relaxed dreaminess to this that i really liked with some interesting, almost free-form sounding interplay between the different instruments. Gorgeous piano work.

Welcome here, Bill!

Beautifully accoustic. The accoustic guitars were especially nice sounding in here and definetly enjoyed the piano playing.

Quality piece of music. Enjoyed immensely!!

Curious, what was used for the piano?

blipp - thanks for the listen and the kind words. There were 3 of us collabarating on this piece, I'm glad that sense of freedom and interplay came through.

Fred - thanks for the encouragement. The piano is from a Kurzweil PC2R rompler. Glad you enjoyed the piece!

Aha ! Glad to see that somebody is appreciating the Kurzwei sound. I recently bought a second hand K2R but couldn't convince Kara about the great sounds of Kurzweil. Here you see it can sit great in a mix ;)

Hey Moon, never said I was appreciating it, just wanted to know what it was  :P ;D

Kidding of course, I asked cause it did sound pretty good!

I looked for a while to find a nice variety of pianos in a rack module. The Kurzweil seemed the appropriate choice and I am very happy with my decision. That unit has several varieties of piano (some might argue that they are subtle variations ...) that are very nice and work well for me. It also has great organ sounds and some nice symphonic and bass sounds too. It's a keeper for me! ;)

Hi Bill
Welcome to the forum.
This is a nice track, with an oriental, relaxed feel.
I like the choice of sounds and how they are working in the mix. The 1st fretless part is a just a bit too loud, IMHO.
The 2nd could be ok but I'll try a different eq on both (more bottom end and I'm not sure but maybe try a cut on middle)
Everything else is fine. I love the acoustic guitar.
When the piano comes in around 4.30 it changes the initial mood of the track. Nice evolution.
The electric guitars are ok for the lead part but sounds differently dry for the rhythm ( I mean the chords) are you using an amp emulator or different settings ?
Excellent work.

Cheers

Hi Laguna Rising,

Thanks for the listen and the comments. You are not the first to mention the EQ on the bass so I may need to go back and revisit that. One of the other collaborators did the electric and acoustic guitar parts and I actually do not know what equipment he used for it !! sorry.  :D Thanks for the kind words.

Very nice! Beautiful, dreamy music. Only thing I would say is that the first few times the violin comes in it sounds a bit less perfect than the other instruments. Great pianos, both electric and acoustic.

I love that bass around 2:15. I LOVE the piano parts starting around 4:35. Wish I could play like that. And there's that bass again. Some audio spikes in the mix though, nothing much but you can hear it (though it could be the mp3 rendering). And I love the guitars (yes, I'm writing while listening! :D) there. I slightly miss some drums and/or percussion. Definetely my favourite part of the track!

Only thing I would like to mention is that the ending is a tad open, a track like that should have a cool, dramatic ending in my view.

General: good choice of sounds, melody and arrangement buildup. Very good!
