Has to be Ella Fitzgerald. Check out "Mack the Knife" on youtube, esp. the live recording in Berlin where she forgets the lyrics and scats and fakes her way though an awesome performance.
The video I'm thinking of seems to be gone. Pity. But lots of other Ella stuff there!
When you listen to "Mack" pay attention to the keychanges. I think (memory) she starts in Eb and end up in D, going up in 1/2 steps after each chorus.
Amazing gal with and amazing voice!

Don't really know why one is required to like disco, just to appreciate Donna Summer's incredible voice, but to each his/her own...as the saying goes. Furthermore,Tina Turner does not possess the velvety smooth transitions & nuances of Donna Summer's voice.Donna Summer's voice is so warm, lush and elegant. I think Tina Turner is a cackling rooster,in contrast to Donna Summer,as Tina's voice is harsh & abrasive. I don't think I could narrow down to a single, favorite vocalist(especially after seeing that Donna Summer video),but Tom Jones is one of my favorites; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zM9sjQsKz0-Thom

I don't care for opera in general, but this 10 year old girl has an absolutely stunning voice; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKhmFSV-XB0This is a must see also; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qecULT01iE&feature=relatedCome to think of it,I would have to put this little angel at the top of my list,in terms of sheer vocal talent and I sincerely hope that she goes on to sing other genres as well,in the future. As a matter of fact,I think this girl has more natural ability than anyone I have ever heard, period! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBUqno0j52U&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZE8A6C5agf8&feature=related

sorry, I don't like disco. Un-Break My Heart is definetly no disco. The song is R&B, soul... at least in my humble opinion. I checked wiki just to be sure ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Un-Break_My_Heart ). About Tina: allthough she is a great singer, I have to agree with Thom. Allthough Tina is the better performer, but that was not the topic Besides: thank god not all of us have the same taste. If we did, there wouldn't be much room for so many artists...

While there are singer-song combinations that work especially well for me, I don't have a favourite singer as such.

I couldn't possibly narrow something like this down to a single person. If I tried, I'd change my mind in five minutes. There are too many criteria to consider. Plus, I'm never keen on making something like music into a competition. There's just something inherently counterintuitive and counterproductive with that notion to me. Here's just one of my favorites--Julie Andrews--from one of my very favorite movies of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=za7dAJtYXwoHere's another one. We've all heard it, I'm sure, but it never hurts to hear it again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHrRxQVUFN4&feature=related
