Title: Rachi
Post by: me109 on November 24, 2007, 08:18:25 AM

What if Sergei Rachmaninoff had been born 50 years later? Instead of the heavy, somber music he contributed to the last part of the Romantic era (although it was great stuff), might he have gotten into big band jazz?

I'm not realy a jazz person. But this sounds very musical indeed.

I'm the jazz guy here  ;D
I have a couple of CD's of him, the piano concertos and the preludes.
Now to answer your question.
I think if he lived now he would be a sort of Klaus Schultze with a taste of jazz  :o

You song is
1. Excelent ! I love the arrangement, the recording, the style, everything. Make a CD like this and I'll buy it immediatly !
2. To short  ::) It should be a least 4 minutes, why did you stop  ???

A fun track! I liked this a lot although, like Kara, I would have preferred it to be longer.

Very skillful playing. Arrangement and composition likewise. Although not my style I can appreciate the workmanship.

However soundwise and mixwise there's room for improvement.

I don't like Rachmaninov so much, but your song is one of the biggies this year. Entirely great...playing, composition (with some Rach...) and especially the vox!

Congrats! ;D

Thanks for the comments - I'm flattered, although it was Rachi himself who did the composition.

As for its length, about all I ever have time for is a two minute song each month for the KVR contest. Any longer and I'd get booted out of it. Maybe sometime I'll find another 30 seconds and try the one here, but it took all month just for this one.

I've been working to clean up my mixes. Up till now I'd given in to the urge to hear nice stuff early on while I'm laying down the tracks, so I had been inserting a lot of effects that would be best left to the final mix when the whole thing can be listened to in context. I was tough on myself this time and didn't get everything too reverby as I usually do. That's why I like this forum and the KVR contest - you can learn a lot from your peers.

Martin E - you said there was need for improvement soundwise. Please be more specific - that's why I'm here...

Soundwise I would have to say that the horn sounds (saxes I presume) are not totally convincing. But we all have to work with the tools we can afford. So don't take that as a criticism.

Mixwise you can improve quite a bit I would think. If you have read my mix tutorial you can find some tips and ideas there that would be beneficial to this track as well. Especially the low end needs some cleaning up. Kick versus bass. Kick and bass versus the low horns.

Hi me,

sorry to be late  :-[

I did enjoy a lot the listening. Fun!
Great arrangements and orchestration. Nice production.
Maybe the whole sound may benefit of a finer equing to help separate better all the different sounds. As it is the whole sound is a little bit flat. Also an exciter on the brasses can make them sound brighter and make the sound clearer. Something like that. ;)
But the musical work is awesome!
Thanks to share.
