Title: Too many ideas...
Post by: folderol on December 06, 2007, 09:32:56 PM
Not enough time to develop them ???

After some discussion on the Linux Audio Users list about hardware and softsynth and hearing a few samples and demos. I got all inspired again.

The trouble is, I now have no less than 5 ideas on the go and nowhere near enough time to develop them!

Does anyone else get that?

If you have time to extend that piece from an intro to a usable length, in that same 'background' format, I would love to take it up as a collab.....if you wouldn't mind.  It has 'something' that inspires me.  :-*
Then you can concentrate on the 'other 4'.

Folderol,

Those chord progressions & synth sounds are exquistite!!I would'nt mind collaborating with your piece as well. 8)

A very lovely start to a song...very well done.

Yes, Folderol, I get that all the time..usually all five ideas are sitting there looking at me in the same multitrack session!

I like your lush heroic sounds here. Worth doing something with.

Well, I really am quite stunned by the response to this one :-

I've just about doubled it's length now, but am not quite happy with some of the later progressions. I shall do more with it.

I was going to make the lower 'answering' part change, but I think it works better as an unchanging 'anchor'. What do you guys think?

I'm more than happy for anyone to build on top if this, and I'll put the 2 minute version up as soon as I'm happy with it.

I think I'll take it out to about 4 minutes all told. With the lower part fixed, that would make it very amenable to splicing and looping if anyone wants to.

Suggestions welcome!

I like the "unchanging anchor" of it in this length, but I wonder if a longer version might want to have that part change at some point?

Hmmm, you may have a good point there.

Here is 'part 2' and I'm already having doubts  :-\

Will,

Nothing like lengthening it to help you hear it clearer.

I like this process..try a change..then listen a lot.

If I listen enough, and my least favorite part will become clear to me.

Then I make another change and listen again.

This is a really beautiful start. I love the sound of it. Stick with it..it's worth it.

Rightiho. Here is something you can work on.

Total time is now 4:38
Rate is 120bpm
Each phrase is 4 bars (except the very last one)
It is 'sort of' hand quantised so you shouldn't have any trouble synchronising.

I guess you'll want to know what the chords are... I'll have to work them out and get back to you. Just cos I stick my fingers on the keys doesn't mean I know what I'm playing ;) If you think anything really clashes let me know and I can change it.

License is Creative Commons BY-SA.

I don't know whether James and Thom would like to work together or each do their own interpretation. I'd be happy with either... or both :D

Here are the chords, as best as I can manage. They may not be accurate!

You'll see that I can't work some out and all, so I've just given the notes I'm playing. I've also tried to mark out each phrase to make things a bit easier. I hope you can use this.

very thematic entrance
kinda 'lost in the mist' feel with elves and such (where the hell is elv?)
I could see this building to a climax eventually.

Thanks.

elv seems to come and go, we were asking about him recently.

I'm wondering if people have noticed there is a third version of this tune, it only seems to have been downloaded twice :(

Well I downloaded it and have had a wee go at it.....but limited time ATM.
However the structure, I must admit, is turning out to be quite daunting. Achieving some sort of melodic balance between the loud parts and the soft parts is 'slightly difficult'.  ::)
Maybe I'll have more chance later in the holidays when life is less hectic.....although with my daughter's wedding coming up mid-January it may be some time.  :-X

Great call/answers, but to me it needs an anchor instrument. The piece still feels like an incidental background theme to a narrators' description of the fiord's of Norway (or something to that effect).

If meant for that purpose what this is, is very good!

(listened to demos 1 and 3, skipping 2)

@offthewall

I agree this isn't the easiest of tracks to work with. It is difficult to know what to do with it, that doesn't spoil what is there.

Where do we sent the Oxfam parcels? ;D

@deaf dunderkwac

I agree it needs an anchor, I was rather hoping someone else would add this. I've deliberately left as much 'space' as possible.

Will,

This is just too good - immense possibilities!

Is that Zyn and Rosegarden?

I'm about 3 weeks away from some free guitar time, and contrary to what you've heard thus far, when I apply myself, it can get interesting... :D
If you would be so kind as to leave this composition right here, I'll have a go when the dust settles.

Something tells me you're going to end up with several versions of this one!

Oren.

Thanks Oren.

It is of course Zyn. + Rosegarden  ::)

I wasn't thinking of making any further changes unless someone particularly wanted something different especially so they could fit something in. I'll go with the flow ;)

Well I won't ever complain of having too many develpments/collaborations :D

P.S. I'd be interested if anyone can work out what e+a+d is or f#+a+c!

well... you've already got lots of people who will, in my estimation, probably supply your anchor... but when you have too many ideas, generally that would be called the "overture"
