Title: Where Have the Rainbows Gone (revisited)
Post by: folderol on January 08, 2009, 01:57:35 PM
It seems a pickerd up a nasty bug on holiday, so I'm stuck at home for a couple of days :(

However, this gave me the chance to tidy up and submit this version on my song.

I have discovered that if I sing at the lower end of my range, it not only sounds quite different, but I seem to hold pitch better.

As usual, comments welcome.

Sorry to hear about the bug, Will .... however clouds/linings, etc.
This is a really brave and powerful interpretation of your classic song.
You've done it justice, my friend. All it really needs IMO is a bit more *projection*.

I would like to hear the vocal be more dominant in this mix.

I am more easily able to hear the higher sounds, and I think
the vocal is the real deal..excellent.

It's a shame that a fellow would have to pick up a bug or lose some rainbows in order to write/perform a song like this, but it's probably better not to question the creative muse...

I think of this style as "Folderol-zone Blues", and it resonates a big Chris Rea/Leonard Cohen vibe, which is good.

So, heal up Will, and maybe we can find you a few new rainbows... ;)

Will, I hope you’re feeling better soon.

About the song, it’s all been said.  Super song that only needs the vox more up front to be perfect IMHO.

Thanks everyone for your concern - things are improving :)

Here is also an improved (I hope) version of my song. I've made the vocal more prominent as suggested, and also backed off each of the lead instruments once the vocal comes in. I've also tried to dampen the room resonance that came from the original mic recording.

I like a lot that deep voice, goes perfectly with the song  8)
Backing off the lead instruments is a good idea, let the public listen to the man that is singing

Will,

Your decision to perform on the low end was an ideal choice,as your tone is perfect for the mood of this song and it sounds really cool as well. 8)
I find it fascinating that most brits lose their accent when they sing...I could never figure that one out. ??? ;) ;D
Glad to finally hear your pipes friend. :D

That's much better, Will.
Listening on headphones there are a lot of elements to this song that remind me of Tom Waits. Very nice indeed. (http://bestsmileys.com/clapping/6.gif)

I don't know if you can use standard VST's with your linux box .... if you can let me know as I can put you on to a couple of plugs which are great for boosting these quiet-style vocals.

Big improvement!
Not to get silly with tweaks, but that room resonance was actually quite a nice effect... ;D
....And, the "horns" at the end could be attenuated further to contribute to the reflective mood.

Thanks again everyone

@Rony
I'm still getting used to the idea that any wants to hear this man singing ;)

@Thom
As long as it's only my accent I lose - no problem :) Glad you like the result.

@Mario
Once again, I'm glad you like it.

@James
It is possible to use some VSTs with linux but it's a major pain in the backside to set up. Eventually I'll look through LADSPA plugins (similar idea) and see what compressors work best. I did do some compression with jamin while sorting out the resonances.

@Oren
There's always one :o I'll let the dust settle for now, but may have another look later. I take your point about the 'horns' though. It's difficult to get exactly the right level with these. To much and they take over, too little and it just sounds like a bit of mush on the 'organ'.

I catch this reworked version later than the others and I think everything is already been said.
It has a sad mood, but I like the sincere expression conveyed by the low register vocals
Well done

Cheers
