one thing I must say and I'll do it here, if your track isn't a direct link or at least streams, I proly won't bother, the auditorium changed to attachments that wouldn't stream and it was the end for me.
I know its a bandwidth thing and seems to be the same here, I'll hangout and play links or streams, thats it..

I'm sure no one gives a rat, but just in case ya wonder why I'm not listening to your track....myself I won't make somebody download onto their drive just to have a listen, I think its uncool...if you like the thing you can always right click it and download anyway.

cheerz...

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: kara on March 12, 2007, 08:43:41 PM
Heu, no it's not the same here, you can direct upload to the forum. So, no excuse  ;D or did I misunderstand something ?
Or do you mean that uploaded files don't stream ?
If that's it , I'm sure Moon can solve this

Kara

Post by: Martin E on March 12, 2007, 08:55:42 PM
I think Ed means that at the old Auditorium you sometimes had to download first in order to be able to listen to the tracks. In most cases the link will start playing immediately. In my case with the Windows Media pl;ayer. I haven't had to download any tracks here yet though.

Oh yeah I'll have a beer if you don't mind.

Nice to be home  ::)

Hey Ed...we need that strong Canadian beer for this thread!

Hey Martin, so who's the favorite this weekend?

Hey Kara, found any new good piano samples lately? Martin and I bought Truepianos. But, I've bought a bunch more pianos.

Hey Zoey, do I need an LP Classic (black) or Studio (classic white). Think I'm gonna order tommorrow!!  Well Martin, maybe you have a thought here too??  Ok here is a real question I've been wondering....ebony vx. rosewood fretboard. One better than the other or it doesn't matter?

Imported ostriches...

yaa, don't want to eat any of that local shit

btw if you have mp9 you've got the m3u codec, problem is the file itself has to end with mp3 or m3u to be streamed, I checked the file in ambient and its not and wouldn't stream

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: kara on March 13, 2007, 08:09:51 AM
Hmm... we need a barman here  ;D or a barwoman (even better)  :P

ok for starters, the streaming thing is not clear for me, but perhaps it will be clear for moon. Do we need to change anything ?

Ostriches? no way, rich people eat oysters with champagne  ;D

For pianos, I've come to a conclusion. If you need a real piano sound you'll have to play a real piano (as if we didn't know that...  ::) ) Now when using a piano in a mix, as most of us do, you need a piano sound that is easy to EQ in the mix. It doesn't make any sense to use $$$$$ piano vsti and then eq 80% out because it clashes with the rest of the mix.
Another criteria is also using tools that you really know. Getting older, I just hate to, in the middle of the creation of a song, wasting time fiddling with a Vsti because I don't get the sound that I want. Seriously, sometimes after doing this, when I finally achieved my goal, I forgot what I wanted to do in the first place  ::) ;D
I've decided to clean up my vsti directory and use only stuff that I know that I need and that I really need.
As for piano, I've purchased GPO used from somebody in Australia, so I got it fairly cheap. I'm pretty happy with the piano in it and use it now as principle vsti. Some other sounds are stunning, the string sections are really good and some windinstruments are stunning. Only backdraw is that you really have to learn it, because it has some specific controls which are not standard.

And now I'll a cofee please  :P

ok for starters, the streaming thing is not clear for me, but perhaps it will be clear for moon. Do we need to change anything ?

There been so many updates and releases on microsoft webbrowser that it isn't clear for me when the streaming works or not. As far I can tell, it is a combination of what version and updates of browser you use, what version and updates of media player you use(?) and what bitrate the mp3 has. So best way to solve the problem is to check these versions with somebody where it does work.

I can't do anything for the songs that are hosted elsewhere, but if you find a song on kara-moon that doesn't work I'll be happy to have a look at it.

Can I have my Tequila now please...euh... I mean... Can I get my beer now ?  ;D

Hey Martin, so who's the favorite this weekend?

Hi Fred. Haven't really followed pre-season testing. So I haven't a clue. Gonna see if I can dig up some information. I'm still rooting for Kimi. The Ferarri should be more reliable than what he was used to at Mclaren.

Ok here is a real question I've been wondering....ebony vx. rosewood fretboard. One better than the other or it doesn't matter?

I'm no expert on this. There's pros and cons for both. Ebony is harder but less oily than rosewood. There's a difference in sound and that should probably be decisive in your choice. My Hagstrom has a resinator fretboard. I had never heard of it before. In the add it says: "The resinator fretboard offers an articulate sound of high-quality ebony but with more consistency and durability". For what it's worth. All I can say is the damn thing plays like a charm.

Cheers

Thanks, Martin!

It would be a lot easier to buy a guitar if I was more experienced (knew everything to look for) and played better. You know what they say about a fool and his money, but I guess that's never stopped me before ;)   I probably just need a little bit of luck!

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....

most important Fred, make sure the neck is straight, look down from the machines level with both edges, the neck and the strings should be parrallel,
give the machines a twist to, they should be smooth,
check the intonation and press the strings down up in the high range without an amp on to check for buzzing,

the sound is mostly a personal thing, different pickups will effect that to.. these other things are more important

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: Fred S on March 14, 2007, 02:28:58 AM
Thanks Ed. Good tips! Hope I get it right! Still deciding between two models; classic and studio. The big difference is in the pickups; ceramic vs. alnico (or something like that), and then just some cosmetic differences (oh yeah, and the studio is $700 cheaper ;))

TBH I can't even handle tequila these days  ;)
Back then I could drink a bottle and then drive home (yeah I know, I was foolish).
Regarding "gals drinking tequila while doing laundry in Mexico", in my father's village they used to give poppy-soup to babies to put them to sleep. Now beat that ;D

In the south of France they drink something called 'Tequilla frappé'
It is a mixture of tequilla and tonic.
To drink it you have to cover your glass, hit in on the counter and drink it immediatly, dagnerous mixture  :o

I was gonna post this in the Hardware section, but there is no "new post" option there currently.

So its here...LP Studio. Classic white with nickel.  Made a deal with the local GC for the lowest price I found on the net and no tax.

I wasn't sure if it would have an ebony or rosewood board as the the manufacturer info said ebony, but the corresponding picture was clearly rosewood. Well, it turns out its Ebony. Sans all the playing/bending important stuff, It works very well aesthetically. Very pretty guitar. I was extremely tempted to bring it straight home and play with it, but I stuck to the original plan, and took it straight to Lucifer (luthier). He said its pretty good overall, but definitely needs some adjustment. $64.95, but at this point 7 to 10 days seems the real price.

Then lucifer threw me a curve..."you know we set these up specifically to the size of the strings you use". "So what do you want us to put on here"? Oh crap, I don't know. Got any magic ones? The ones on here now are just as lousy as the ones I played on 20 years ago ::)  So, some back and forth, and ended up with Ernie's Balls size 10. I guess some like 11's. But this guy said that for this guitar, 10's were the popular choice.

You know, its gotta be a lot like riding a bicycle, cause I seem to be at the same lousy playing ability I was 20 years ago and haven't played hardly at all during that time. Lessons start Monday....gotta learn proper technique so I can begin teaching my son....gave him the Mexican made Strat.

Anyway, I gotta say I'm pretty happy! Well, except for the wait.

Thinner strings are easier to play...

that sounds great Fred, guitars are magical things when ya get a nice one
unreal prices to me though, somehow I'd pay $200, cause I live in an igloo I guess
anyway I think I got 11's on mine, flat wound
too bad you couldn't see a tech guy string it, I have a friend that does it for me sometimes, I never really mastered the art of re-stringin a guitar,

btw theres a huge snowstorm coming through right now, its big!!! I've had 5ft of snow on my lawn for 2 months....its getting a bit on now

Hi Fred  You sly devil. I see you've made some last minute changes to your team. Had a good score with Davidson and BMW Sauber. Massa cost me some valuable points. Kimi didn't let me down though.

Congrats on the new guitar. Were talking genuine Gibson here?

I haven't been idle either. Bought a twelve string acoustic on the Dutch equivalent of Ebay yesterday  Gonna pick it up tomorrow morning. It's about an hours drive from my home. And guess what; it's another Hagstrom but this time no reissue but the real deal from 1977. These guitars are rated highly for their sound and durability. Been doing some research on Hagstrom guitars ever since I bought the Super Swede. Read about the twelve string Hagstrom B120 and to my surprise, using the search engine, there was one for sale yesterday. Couldn't let it pass me by.

Also congrats on your moderator job, Fred  How much did you bribe Kara for ;D

That's it for now . Have a good race.

Yeah you know, it costs you 10% to change anything, so I really had my doubts after I did it. But maybe it will work out in the end? How did you get Kimi and Massa? Your not that rich ;) ;D

Yeah, I probably mentioned before that I had bought a brand new LP custom when I was a kid (1976) and stupidly sold it. So mainly, just wanted another real LP. The studio is not the top of the heap though. Pretty much a Standard without the binding, so it costs less.

That 12-string sounds awesome. I'll bet she's a real treasure!!!!  I'm not really a guitar player, but just the same, I feel the need for quality equipment. Sounds like you did it right here  ;D

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: Martin E on March 17, 2007, 09:14:39 PM
I'll have to wait for tomorrow and see if it's really quality equipment.  ;D

I don't have Kimi and Massa as drivers.  But I do have Ferrari as an engine. So both drivers supply points for that part.
Which reminds me I still have to send you the rest of the rules  ;D

well, I dont know about culture. That might be giving me too much credit, but thats the way i like them best. Preferable straight after you've pulled them from the intercoastal. Re oysters: VG got it right, that's the proper way
Re F1: Renault fan since many years but this year is not a good one for my fav team :-[

EDIT @FredS:sorry for not replying to your guitar related questions but I think MartinE took care of them (and judging by his sound Martin knows what's he's talking about). If you want my 0.02$ I like maple necks better than rosewood (not sure if it applies to your case). I think it gives more 'twang'. Could be less forgiving for a beginner though.

I wish you're right but I doubt it. No matter how much I like Jiancarlo as a person I think he's not in the same league as Fernando or Kimi. And the new driver is an unknown quantity for now (Flavio was mad at him after the Australian GP finish)

Flavio said Heikki Kovalainen had screwed up big time. Which is an unusual thing for a teamboss to say in public. So he must have been quite disappointed. With Flavio you can expect anything  ;D

By the way you guys all eating oysters here. Not particularly my favourite dish. But you know the Dutch; we eat raw herring.  ;)

I never understood why Massa was deemed to be a favourite. He has never convinced me as a being a top driver. His attempt to overtake Hamilton in one of the first laps was a joke.

Must say Alonso and Mercedes were a lot stronger than I expected. Hamilton is a revelation.
In his outlap he said to his engineer Yeah it was a good race but next time I wanna win.  :o

The only reason I can think of is the reported "tutoring" from Schumacher.

That had to be embarrasing because it did look bad, especially against a rookie. Did you catch Hamilton's comment in the interviews about "tricking" him and that he apologizes? Wasn't quite sure how to take that...almost sounded a bit arrogant, again, especially for a rookie. Don't ya just love F1  ;D

F1 thoughts:

I hear that next year they will be doing away with tracktion control. I say its about time....its a crutch IMO. The more the race is in the hands of the drivers, the better I like it. So, I'm looking forward to that.

Seems we're going to have quite a showdown this year. No one's got in the bag. Should be fun!

What the heck has happened to Renaul! Lucky for Alonzo. If he happens to win this year (back to back)  but with a different team, he'll have instant historical credibility.

One of the most beautifull races of the season imho.
No, not because it's in France  ;D but because it is in the city and not on a circuit.
And, perhaps yes...., because it is the only one that I ever saw for real. Man, you should hear those engines when they pass between those buildings.

I hope Hamilton doesn't break his car like he did during  the testruns.

Great performance of Mercedes of course, taking first and second place, but (allso important) allmost 1 minute before the 3°.

Hey guys! How about that 9th place finish by American Scott Speed...up 9 spots from qualifying!! ;D

Anyone watching the Indianapolis 500 today, or is it past its prime in countries outside US? Well its somewhat past its prime here as well...no longer the golden years with Mears, Andretti, Al Unser and the like. The split in the open wheel leagues here have really hurt the race (and US open wheel racing in general). But, I watch anyway for tradition's sake.

Yeah, Indianapolis, the first images are coming right now, well... the fact is we don't really know the drivers. It seems strange here you have women in the race, but we'll get used to it  :)
I've been in places (in the midwest) where they watch and talk about NASCAR all the time and they doesn't care about open wheel. I think you're right for both reasons: league split and drivers quality or fame

Laguna Seca is a great track. Not far from here. They hold several good races each year. Gotta love anything with a motor negotiating the famous corkscrew ;D  Also close by is Sears Point...not sure what they're calling it these days. NASCAR runs there each year...one of only two tracks where they turn right occasionally  ;)

While I'm waiting on my beer I want to adderss the streaming thing.

Using WMP10
At most sites, including my own, if I click an mp3 file that is posted on the internet my computer will open windows mediaplayer and the song will start playing after a couple seconds *while it is downloading*.This is called streaming. If I click on an mp3 file on this site the whole song has to download before wmp will open and play it.

..and just so Ed knows- even when it does stream correctly from other sites it gets put on your hard drive as a tmp file. That is if it's an mp3. An mpu, I believe, doesn't and just plays from the site. So that is no excuse to not listen here!  The only thing here is that you have to wait for the whole song to load. It still gets loaded as a temp file and goes away when you delete your temp internet files periodically. The server is quick here and downloading doesn't take long, so I believe it's something with the way the site is set up.
If the thread links actually led *directly* to the mp3 that was uploaded WMP should be able to stream it.  I didn't do anything special at my site to make it happen, I think it's more of a situation where whoever set the site up did something to cause it to not happen.  And I'm sure there are others like ED who don't listen to songs from here because of it. 'Instant Gratification'  society and all..

You guys get the SPEED chanel feed? They had a 3-hour special yesterday called F1 Live (from Indianapolis). The panelists (Windsor, Hatchet, Daly, etc) interviewed every F1 driver in front of a live crowd (except for Kubica who is trying to race this weekend if he's cleared). Interesting format. I have never seen that with F1, so you might look for it if you get that feed.

Interesting to get a feel for their individual personality. Easily the best spoken of the lot was Coulthard, Takuma perhaps the most engaging, the most serious was probably Heidfeld. Alonzo was actually a pretty good interview, in stark contrast to Kimi...but you could have guessed that ;) ;D

Well, I don't have the full broadcast but some extract from it. I watch it while in the US....
We get the full qualifying and it's interesting to see how much more room is in the indy track, contrast is higher beacuse we're coming from a tight city track as Montecarlo.  ;)

Let's see it

My favourite beers are Stella A - Heineken - Warsteiner
in the Us usually Coors or Miller but there are many good micro-breweries and also european beers like Beck's or Heineken are popular and easily available nowdays... ;D

The beer I enjoy most is Corona with a slice of lime...especially when just in from a hot day golfing here in the valley ;)  102 degrees on Friday :o

However, I'm 5 weeks in to a quest to lose 30 lbs (not sure the kilo equivalent ;D) so I'm limited to 2 beers a week...Michelob Ultra...an ok tasting beer with very low carb count.

btw, your place is really doing well here Rony & Moon. Sorry I haven't been around as I should lately. BUT, the house is now officially painted...inside and out. The last thing is new carpet and some hardwood down the hallway. But I'm taking a break first so I can get a little rest and finally work on a tune Martin sent me. I'll be getting it done this week, Martin!!!  I promise! No excuses ::)

Anyway, gottta run. The live feed from Indy just started. Sorry, can't pull for Hamilton anymore after seeing his interview...he's a phenon but he's not humble about it in the least. Actually, I'm not sure who to pull for anymore...maybe Massa...seems like a good guy. I'd love to pull for Speed. Actually I know him slightly from my karting days, but he's just not the brightest bulb in the socket (if you know what I mean) ;D

Enough writing for now? ::)

Hamilton is not very modest. But Schumacher wasn't either And that makes a champion I guess. Alonso must be wondering what the hell is happening to him. ???
Same car, same strategy; can't beat that guy Hamilton  Alonso is  :-[

The pit strategy worked perfectly for Kimi. Honestly, I was surprised he pulled it off.

Reportedly, Ferrari had a major accident in their wind tunnel a little while back which they claim inhibited them from getting the most out of their cars in the North American races. Not sure how much of that is true (its F1 afterall ;)) but they looked good in France!!!

And Rony, shame on you, in your own country and all  ::)

Hi guys, back with a suntan. Yeah saw the Silverstone race alright. Barman had the tv set up. Escaped Kos just in time before it hits 40 degrees Celcius out there. Nice and cool in The Netherlands.

So Kimi again on pole and Hamilton on a stretcher. We'll see what tomorrow brings. The Europe grandprix is usually pretty boring but maybe it will be different this time.

Yeah, Hamilton had a problem yesterday. :o
This is an intense (passive)-sport weekend  ;D
The spaniard Sergio Garcia is leading the british open, don't you all like golf ?
And I'll also follow the motorbikes/MotoGP race in Laguna seca, late evening in europe but 2 pm california time.
That track seems really improved in the last years, but the famous 'corkscrew' remains a very spectacular point.

Very interesting race. I enjoyed that.
Now Garcia is messing things up. He's 2nd with Harrington atm, a guy from Argentina is taking the lead.

Just bits and pieces (beer and nuts), Thom. Non-music related common interests.  Btw, just poured a Mango/Vodka. Interesting combination ;)

Back to F1 however...just as we thought no more surprises, I hear the FIA is considering penalizing Hamilton for his driving behind the safety car!!!  Ah, F1. Gotta love it :D :D  Qualifying is about to start soon. Maybe we'll hear more about it.

Hi there,
one of the main subject for discussion, here, is watching sports...
What's going on atm ? is anybody following NFL football ? I'm not a fan of any particular team but I like watching a big match on TV. I know it's not very popular in Europe, but there were a game last sunday in London's Wembley stadium. It's more rewarding than advertisment for the league.
I like downhill skiing world cup as well
Any other sport ?

Cheers

Post by: folderol on October 31, 2007, 10:52:56 PM
I tend to just dip in and out of various sports (as a spectator I hasten to add). I got quite interested in F1 this year as a lot of very strange and different things were happening. In the SCHUMACHER years it was getting positively boring.

I quite like to see ice dance, and gymnastics, especially the floor exercises, but these seem never to be on TV these days :(

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: Martin E on October 31, 2007, 11:03:16 PM
I'm a soccer man. So just plain football as we call it here in Europe. I'm still playing myself but I'm getting older and my body lets me know so after a game. ;D So that's my main sport of interest. I also like to watch F1 though not as fervent as a couple of years ago.

Seemed well-attended from what I could see.

Big news in the NFL is this weekend's match up between the Patriots and Colts...both undefeated...the top two favorites to win it all this year. How often is the defending champs and winners of the last 12 or 13 games in a row, an underdog at home? Interesting match up.

I try not to like too many sports (takes too much time), but can't help liking racing and pro football. The winter olympics also get some of my time!!

Big news in the NFL is this weekend's match up between the Patriots and Colts...both undefeated...the top two favorites to win it all this year. How often is the defending champs and winners of the last 12 or 13 games in a row, an underdog at home? Interesting match up.

Great expectations from this match, I'm glad to watch it on pay tv... ;)

I didn't get to watch any TV today at all.

Morning was spent getting some autumn photos while the leaves were still on the trees (Denge Wood of course), then shopping, and this afternoon a massive clear-up in the garden and fence rebuild, leaving me too tired for much else.

... and of course now I'm on here :D

I had some hiking in the morning. I like it.
Now I'm taking a break from TV, we watch Minnesota - San Diego (a good match. The Vikings took the lead in the 2nd half)
Now is the time for the big match  ;)

Well..I gotta admit I watch every Lions game  :o...only this year it's a lot more fun!
Their record for last 8 games; 6wins-2losses
Record for the 30 games before that; 6wins-24losses
They had a great game today; 44-7 over Denver.

OK..so I am trying to learn how to type all over again on this laptop..not enough light in here apparently..don't know why I never noticed that before..

..anyway a short tale..a few months ago, I happen on some nice looking stainless steel containers shaped just like a shot glass..and since I didn't own a shot glass any longer, and since I tuck the occasional bottle of Bombay Sapphire into the freezer, I decided to buy them. [you would recognize these..restuarants often serve salad dressing, tartar sauce, or ketchup in them]

..so anyway..the other day..just for the heck of it, I measured them, and much to my surprise I found that rather than holding the 1 oz I had assumed..they actually hold three ounces.

Now that explains a LOT of things..    :o  :o  :o  :o  :o

Well, lately my life has become 'interesting' (and expensive too).

First of all half my own website disappeared (it's still not back although I can access it directly via FTP), then I lost all 'net access.

'Extended' calls to my ISP and my Line provider sort of got flaky results, with each blaming the other. They first both tried to say it was my end, but had to admit that was unlikely when the ordinary phone works perfectly, and I had swapped in a replacement router and microfilter.

At work on Friday, I was informed that a part we have already been waiting several weeks for will not now be available until the middle of January. This means one of our jobs comes to a dead halt. I hasten to add that I had to make calls to the supplier, then the supplier's supplier. Nobody had bothered to let anyone know there was a problem.

Saturday, taking a break from all of this I went down a narrow country lane, as a sort of short cut to one of my chillout places, only I never got there. As I reached a bend on the steepest part, I lost all traction to a patch of oil rather than ice. This was also at just about the only part where the bank is not straight sided but curves up from the road. The result was that the car was slowly but firmly rolled over onto it's side.

Because of the timing, the car can't be assessed for repairs until 2nd January, and until the insurers agree the estimate and authorise the work I don't get a courtesy car.

I was afraid I was going to have to cancel all my Christmas arrangements, but the one good bit of news is that I was finally able to get a hire car ... at 5:30 this evening!

-much respect for living on a cat. Vaga-wandering suits me fine.

funnie about me, as much as I like the ocean I hate being on a boat in a choppy sea. And as you know the sea gets mighty choppy.

Today I was watching 6-20' waves crashing against the rocks at Harrison Beach

About the most 'rocking' I can stand is the truck parked in 40mph gusts with the jacks up.
The nice part about being on land is I can always lower the jacks (from inside the truck lol)

-The truck runs fine, but the carb is grumpy and the throttle plate is almost worn out. Gas mileage is well below 10mpg! Can't get a bushing kit for it anymore so I had to get a new carburetor which I'm installing sometime this week.
When the heck did these things get so expensive? Last carb I bought was less then $100 about 10 years ago. This one was $500.

But one trip to SoCal pays for the repairs... plus some.

I got used to it..there is a stage where you get seasick when you get on land! ..that's right..get on land and all of a sudden everything is moving. What I loved about it the most was poking around in the dinghy..exploring..

..the life was tough on my lady so I sold the boat..no complaint there..I got the better end of that deal.  :)

Yikes!!..they are nailing me every time I get something for my truck..sucker cost me a grand last month..heck of a reason to hang onto it, eh??  :))

..it's not that there is no inflation..it's just that nobody cares anymore..aint television wonderful?

You headed south when you're fixed up?  If I were still at it, I would be looking for a deal on a building lot down where they had the fires..put a house on it, and finance a few more years.

It took three years to build that boat, and two months to rig it. That was somewhat of a speed record.

- why I don't go on boats lol.

...due more battering tomorrow and the rest of the week.
I think I like the Oregon coast because of Pacific extremes!
The moderate temps here keep me happy, as I'm burning about 3-4 gallons of propane per week. Hardly any people during the winter.

I lived in the Florida Keys in the early 70's, but having re-visited in '02 I wasn't enthralled with the masses.
Although I do miss snorkeling!

Sounds like you are "in the pocket" on that..low propane use and no people..perfect formula for wintering-over. I have pulled a trailer into some fairly out of the way places in November, and then had them fill up in December..yikes!! ..and wouldn't you know it, the first person to come into the campground would inevitably park right next to me..

..hmm..have to count years backwards on my fingers..that must be a sign of something.  :)  ..I was in Key West in '01..on a mooring in Garrison Bight..2 1/2 miles from the dinghy dock..a few hundred yards from the Navy Seals "Better Not Land Here, Sucka" signs..used to watch them parachute into the ocean and then get picked up by helicopter..

Weird town, Key West..it's kind of like cafe' racing at the zoo.  :)

I was doing a re-fit with some parts I picked up in Naples on the way down..some of the hardware the designer spec'ed out failed in our first storm..so I got busy and overbuilt the hardware..found me a nice little island and outfitted my (dinghy) 12 foot Carolina Skiff for big game fishing..Grouper and Barracuda are still my favorite eating fish.

I used to spear fish under the boat and then fire up the little stainless steel BBQ..yeah..it had its moments.

Keep warm; keep dry.

Its been nasty here, LR. Nice this morning, but the rain came down in sheets yesterday afternoon. Lucky I got out first thing in the morning to repair the fence (the wind knocked down a couple sections) befor the rains hit. Suffered the old scrated gonads on the way back over the fence though :D

The wind was unbelievable on Friday. Actually kept people in the foothills from making it to work.

Felt sorry for the folks in the mountains with a few areas getting +100 mph wind gusts (the highest in the Valley was 82, 72 in my area). Blizzard conditions and a a real mess up there in the Sierras.

Good thing is... no serious flooding in our area, and I keep looking up at the ceiling...but no leaks yet ;D

Its settling down a bit today. Thanks for asking!!

btw, did you see Pittsburgh just give the game away at the end yesterday? Terrible coaching :P

Oh, good, I'm glad your doin fine.

Yeah, that's true it seems like a wasted season for them.
I had a glance at Seattle over Washington, as well. But I think it'll be hard for them with Green bay.
I'm not really an expert into the field, but I see the 'usual suspects' Indianapolis and New England doing well, not expecting any surprise from underdogs, but I can be wrong  :-\

Cheers

but I can be wrong  :-\

Well, if you couldn't be wrong, you would be rich ;) ;D

The AFC seems to be a little stronger then the NFC with Ind & New England in that conference. Of course, only one of those two can go to the Super Bowl. So, I'm hoping for Ind to beat NE in an upset in the AFC Championship Game. Can always hope  ::)  ;D

In the NFC, the top two teams seem to be Dallas and Green Bay.

But, every year there seems to be an upset or two along the way. That's what makes it fun!

HAHA
I did notice there are 'issues' living in an old truck.
Luckily I have noting else better to do than take care of broken things and re-sealing the occasional mis-hap (did I tell you about the three bone-headed oil jockeys who directed my truck right into an overhead obstruction.... bleck)

I love the weather here. I'd have to go as far south as San Francisco to get a better ratio of sun/ovecast days!  But... the electrical is heavily based on solar power. I NEED SUN
Funny how the weather directly south of here is much colder.

So I'm looking forward to a new carburetor.
I know I can use a different manufacturer's setup. I'm guessing I might have to go that route to get up the mpg again.

Cheers!

well heck... after reviewing the news around the border counties I'm only going as far south as Fred's house (your neighbors won't mind, will they Fred?  >:D )

I'm re-evaluating my directions now!!! But I REALLY don't want to pass through the Sierra Nevada's via I-80 if I can only travel in the right lane (like rolling over crevices!!- they need to fix that hiway)

so anyway, on this month's KvR contest (where I truly enjoy annoying contestants) adj (alex) asked about collaborators.
I insisted we do it "in the thread". Put up some lame metal guitar intro and said TAG, you're IT (http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/12/21/1655647/entroDDK.mp3)
Of course he (she... who cares) declined the offer so I started collaborating with my self, first churning out
this (http://www.box.net/shared/m8rieoq4o0)
then  this (http://www.box.net/shared/lxj0kcv4gs)
and
Quote from: Boston University professor Ray Carney, a leading authority on beat culture
Beat culture was far from monolithic. It was many different, conflicting, (http://www.box.net/shared/mzmcxxh444) shifting states of mind.

It's the only way I can force myself to chill-out properly. No computers. No boss. No noisy neighbours.

The hardest decision I'll have to make each day will be whether to cool off in the sea, or in a beach bar ;D

I might drop in here again later this evening or tomorrow - it depends how easy the packing turns out to be!

da bestest.
went a whole month without drinking any and I finally have an appointment for the truck. AND a bottle of canada's best (or worst, depending)

Still need a new keyboard. I probably shouldn't have re-learned piano on a minikeys keyboard but what the heck. Limits my choices!

The 'key' (snicker) is it has to be a small keyboard and 37 keys are about right for most my crap playing.

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: folderol on February 18, 2008, 09:06:31 PM
The holiday was great :) The computer woes since are erm, also great :(

First the PSU in my office machine died, so I used the music one for e-mail and web browsing for a while.

Eventually got a new PSU (it's one of those slimline ones). The office 'pooter ran fine for a couple of days then started doing very strange things. At random it would run v e r y  s l o w l y, then pick up again. Thought it was maybe a memory problem and changed that out which seemed to make a slight improvement, but not much.

Then I started to get disk errors (on a 2 year old sata drive) and almost every time I switched the machine on, it would go though a forced disk recovery routine. Finally it wouldn't even get past the login screen ???

Temporarily hooking the disk into my music machine, lo & behold it booted up perfectly. Stuck the supposedly faulty memory in there and that behaved perfectly too, so it looks like the earlier PSU failure damaged the motherboard.

Just to make things interesting my only spare machine doesn't have sata capability, so I had deep joy using my music machine to transfer all the important files to dvd, doing a fresh install on the old machine then copying the data to it and configuring everything to my usual style. Finally restoring my music machine to it's normal state.

That all took large chunks of the weekend :(

Now what were we saying about percentage of time actually making music ::)

In case anyone is interested, I'll be going to the Linux Audio Conference in Cologne on Friday 29th. It actually starts on Thursday, but I could only grab one day off work. However it carries on till Sunday :)

This has been running for a couple of years now, but I've never been before. There are several concerts, sound exhibitions and papers & workshops. One bit that particularly grabbed my attention is 'AMBI@Home'. This is apparently a paper on setting up ambisonic listening with only simple cheap kit and all the control being done in software.

I like the old city anyway, so even if this all turns out not to be my 'thing' I'll enjoy the weekend!

More info is at http://lac.linuxaudio.org/

It's a song (rather a good one) that appeared on here briefly. When I couldn't find it again I thought I must have been mistaken and got it from KVR, but there is no trace of it there either.

P.S.

Well, I had a great time at the Linux Audio Conference. Some of the more technical papers went a bit over my head but there was some really interesting stuff there.

There were some fun audio 'installations' too. The one that got everyone, was called 'hear shaped box'. As youi approached it, it made sort of delicate 'tweety' sounds which got louder as you got nearer, then with just a hint of vocalisations. Reach out to the box (everyone did) and it roars at you like a lion!

The Saturday evening concert was fun, with about 10-12 items varying from 1 - 8 min., but more soundscape orientated rather than 'conventional' music.

I will definitely be going again.

We got it live on "speed channel" (in HD this year!) at 9:00 pm. Next week though at Malaysia it shows live at 11:00 pm. But its a Saturday night, so I'll probably stay up and watch it anyway  ;D  Had a friend over and we celebrated the first race of the year with an artichoke spread over sourdough french bread slices and Margaritas. Apple turnovers for desert.  :D

Didn't know you guys watched it later. Good thing I didn't give too much away :)

I like R. Kubica's driving, he's still young but he can do good

The guy's pretty fearless...even after his big crash last year.

So here's the question;

Will any team win a race this year outside of Ferrari & Mclarren? Who? How many?

I think BMW/Sauber might pick up a couple wins. They're getting closer. Toyota looks better this year as does Red Bull. But, probably, both are still a year away.

I heard next year there will be new rules and it'll be much different from the current season.

With slick tyres, significantly reduced downforce and energy recovery systems giving them temporary boosts of extra power, Formula 1 cars are going to be very different animals next year.

The funny one is the FIA wanting to do away with the tire warmers!  The basis for most of these changes is to reduce costs. But, my guess is teams are just going to find another way to heat the tires...probably at more expense. And the slicks; didn't they just start requiring the grooves a couple years back? Opinions are that the FIA just doesn't get it, and the more changes they make to reduce costs, the more is necessarily spent on development. For example, take the change from 10 to 8 cylinder engines last year. And, any changes really won't keep costs low enough to keep undersponsored teams afloat...Super Aguri for example.

Perhaps they are changing focus back to driver skills more then to technology ?

k

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: Fred S on April 29, 2008, 03:34:33 PM
Yeah, maybe so, Rony. I think its great that they dumped traction control. But on the other hand, technology is what has always set F1 apart.

But, the tire warmers...that's just idiocy to this naive fan. If you don't warm them up, you'll be sending drivers out on the track that have to run at different speeds, slipping and sliding around, until they get up to temperature. They're kind of a safety device in a way.

That said however, it doesn't really matter to me, its just fun to see what happens next!!

Monte Carlo is so unique, I would love to visit there someday.

This is the biggest race weekend of the year; F1 in the early morning, the Indy 500 at 10:00 am, and the NASCAR Coca Cola 600 at around 3 pm. Luckily like folderol, I'm off on Monday (whew!)

Geez, that sounds like a lot! Certainly more than you asked about, LR :D

Yes Oren, Croatia treated me very well. A great relaxing week in the sun with no newspapers, TV, Internet - Not even radio - bliss 8)

Mostly I meandered up and down the shoreline, the hardest decision being whether to chill in the sea or the next bar. I tried both - frequently :P

I may have to check it out again next year as I still haven't concluded which was best.

Thanks Oren ;D

I'm having a late night/early morning today - been watching excerpts of the Glastonbury festival on the good old BBC. I really wish I was there. The Glastonbury crowd is very enthusiastic and supportive of the musicians.

There had been some sniping in the press about the lineup, especially about Jay Z. Now rap really isn't my thing, but kudos to the guy for turning it round on his critics and using their own words to show them up. The crowd loved it :D

Been watching Glastonbury as well. Good to see the weather is holding up. Last year was a disaster. Amy Whinehouse was great. Everyone expected her to drop off the stage after she had been to the hospital earlier this week  ;D Duffy is another one of my favourites at the moment.
One of the best festivals in Europe.

This was a typical English summer day - of course that gives our lads a distinct advantage as it's normal motorway driving conditions ;D

Strange (and costly) decision by Ferrari on tyres ???

Did you get the impression that the crowd were, erm, somewhat 'pleased' with the result :D

I saw a magnificent sunset this evening (sorry didn't have a camera with me). There were quite thick 'fluffy' clouds over most of the sky except to the West, so the sun was lighting up the undersides of the clouds. Really dramatic, lots of reds, oranges, and golds.

Can't help thinking that L.H. is suffering a severe bout of overconfidence. He just seems to keep taking dangerous chances, and as a result has just about frittered away his lead. Just two races to go and his lead is down to 5 points.

Yeah, it must be tough to be that young and talented...almost like he gets nervous at crunch time. Remember last years sand trap!! Unbelievable turn of events.

Can you believe what happened to Massa in Singapore. 100s of millions of dollars invested and they are now back to the good ole lolly pop  ;D  Honestly, I believe the safety car rules really need to be changed. Probably no NASCAR fans here, but I think they do a much better job with caution rules.

Today (well yesterday now!) I had a day off work, and went to Bletchley Park - This is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I actually spent about half the day there, loking around the various enigma/radio/computer exhibits. However, impressive though all this was, the thing that really blows your mind is the see (and hear!) the rebuilt Colossus computer actually running and decoding a paper tape. For those who don't know, this was the worlds first programmable computer, and its all valves, relays, plugs and switches.

I've attached a few photos I took, and if anyone is interested here is Bletchleys website link

Actually being there and hearing the gently clicking relays, whirring tape drive, and seeing the pattern of lights shift all against the steady dull glow of the valves gives a very comfortable atmosphere. It has that strange hypnotically reassuring feel that an old grandfather clock does.

That was an astonishing first race. What a debut for the new Brawn team. Amazing that a relatively small team could produce a car and not one but two winning drivers after such a rocky year or so under the Honda flag.

Hamilton proved his skill to pull up as far as he did. All the teams did a good job with the exception of Farrari - they seem to have totally lost the plot!

There seems to be more of a mix of driving styles, and more taking chances, with quite unpredictable results of course.

Half points awarded. Actually hurts the top finishers. Was a chance for button to get a good points lead over the pack.

There was actually some very good racing...like that Webber/Alonzo duel. The new rules may have helped the racing a bit.

Its nice to see the usual suspects getting it handed to them, but I'm kinda old school and like to see things change over time. For me, mass change kind of nums the drama...if that makes any sense at all.

On lie gate, Hamilton is still a kid. Perhaps when he matures he'll learn that there is never a good reason to lie. I like the action by the stewards...sends a proper message.

Have to agree, Andreas, F1 can be a little boring.  However, you can't find the level of offtrack entertainment anywhere else...that is if you like cheating, espionage, crazy rulemaking, pompous personalities, questionable behavior from top officials, and the ripest example of capitalism anywhere!!!

Unfortunately, ecklestone and the FIA may have gone to far this time with next years rules changes. The split of the top teams from F1 would be devastating to the series.  You'd think they would have learned something from the American debacle between Champ Car and the IRL.

Post by: folderol on September 13, 2009, 01:25:42 PM
Oh happy, happy me :)

Friday, about 4:30pm (at work) saw the final resolution of a problem bit of kit that has taken over 6 months to fix.

The machine would fail to start every Monday morning until it had been swithced off and on several time and generally bashed and sworn at by the operators. After that it would be fine for the entire week.

This is just about the worst kind of intermittent fault. It took us several month tracking it down to one control module, after eliminating all the usual relays, switches etc. Also, the machine is an early 1980s build, which was very much a 'transition' period and means it has just about every kind of electrical and electonic system in it :(

Once narrowed down to this module, all the other engineers gleefully washed their hands of it. "Transistors and chips mate - that means you." was their happy cry. To make matters worse, the production manager wanted the machine back in operation (such as it was) at least 3 days a week, so no pressure then!

The thing was so critical, that even the act of unbolting it from it's mountings would clear the fault. From experience I knew that just had to be a hairline fracture somewhere, so I'd spend a day pooring over it with a very bright light and high power magnifier, which is a hell of a strain on these old eyes.

The main circuit board was actually in remarkable good condtion for its age, and having resoldered a number of possibly suspect joints. I'd take it back, and wait for the inevitable "Nope. Still the same"..

Finally I had the bright idea of creating a sort of protective plastic bag cocoon in the machine with the offending unit mounted as usual but without any of the casing. Monday came and I was waiting for it. The operators were told not to touch it at all, and I was the one who switched it on, just once. The fault was there and I could extremely carefully poke around the board. After a couple of hours of this (in an extremely cramped place under the machine) I finally spotted a dead internal power line. Bridging across it sparked the machine into life, and, of course cleared the fault.

It wasn't till Thursday I could take the board off the machine to try to find the exact cause, and then, even knowing what the problem was didn't tell me where it was! By the end of friday I was getting deperate. Every part of that line that I could see was in perfect condition. I'm ashamed to admit it took one of the office girls to nudge me in the right direction. "Maybe it's a bit you can't see".

Removing a couple of large components reavealed it. Indeed a hairline fracture caused by years of tiny micro-movements of one of the components that had been glued to the board in manufacture, only the glue missed its target and hit this bit of trackwork. instead.

The thing with hairlines is that, left switched off, a film of oxide builds up breaking the connection, but the most minute movement rubs this off, and a sudden electical charge can also perfom a temporary 'micro-weld'.

Big deal :P ::)

I know... I used to play hockey, before it became an exercise in "domination through intimidation".
Had a run-in with this kid (during a practice game), a nephew of a famous NHL star, and felt like he'd nearly decapitated me. His target: me, not the puck. We were about 16 years old; seems I lost interest in the game about that time...

I used to be a goalie until the guys my age got really good at shooting.  Then a friend said  "Are you nuts? He is shooting as hard as he can and you are intentionally trying to get in the way of it!"

About then I came to my senses.
Tried switching to defense the next year, but had some experiences like Oren that once again brought me to my senses (once I recovered)

Being from Detroit its the only sport we can count on..  :o

I actually enjoyed the contact.  The roughing around was fun.  When it bacame more 'serious' I decided it was time to let common sense kick in. If it could have stayed roughing around for fun I'd still play, but some guys got too physical where the fun went away real fast.

So I turned into the next great tennis star!  Well almost ..  ;D

Makes me think of American football, where the game became so dangerous they really needed all that padding.  Whats the point?
Mind you I can't understand all those stops and starts anyway. The game doesn't seem to have any sort of flow.

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: rharv on March 12, 2010, 03:07:51 AM
I enjoy football.  I turned to that after quiting hockey.
Eventually I dislocated my shoulder and that one ended too.
So it was tennis from then on. I started tennis early on in life and accomplished more in that than any of the others.

American football is a lot of stop/start, but the strategy during those 30 second breaks is fun.  Figuring out what the other guy is going to do, etc.
Then full force attempts at moving the ball. The right play and good execution are the challenge. Then before you really recover from the previous effort, you are lining up for the next battle.  It really is a game of battles, individual and team, and has a touch of chess thrown in.

Football is much more complicated than hockey.  Hockey is more spontaneous and reaction based.  However icing and off-sides are pretty much the only rules (other than unfair individual play like tripping etc)  So I think football takes a little more planning/thinking.   But hockey is much more exciting. IMO anyway.

There is a reason those American football players wear all that padding, and most of them still suffer quite a bit from their profession.  I can only imagine the later life of Rugby players.

What do you think of the new rules regarding fuel. I think I liked the old rules better; strategy for fuel load during qualifying & 2 vs 3 stops in the race. Looks like 1 tire stop may now be the norm. Less entertaining for me. That said, it seems F1 is usually quite keen on fixing things that aren't broke.

Disgraceful behavior by the Ferrari team boss. As far as I'm concerned Massa won that race. The fine is pathetic, but hopefully there will be more action taken. Up until Massa was ordered to let Alonso through (and yes it was clearly an order clumsily worded to suggest it wasn't) I was quite supportive of Ferrari, as they've had a poor couple of seasons. But now I hope they get taken to the cleaners.

Poetic justice would be for Alonso to be bumped down to third place. Thinking on, I remember Ferrari have been involved in a lot of shady practices over the years, including industrial espionage.

Latest D'oh moment resolved today.

For a little while my DAW had been having occasional boot up problems. It would hang part way through, or fail to see the sound card etc. but every time this happened a reboot cleared the problem, and it was so eratic I couldn't pin it down.

This morning it failed totally. Fans came on, hard drive did it's seek but no video and no start beep.

So...
I started taking things out, first the video card (always a favourite) - no go.
Memory - nope.
Hard drive - Nah.
CDRM drive - bingo. Warning beeps.
Put everything except the drive back in and everything came up fine. Pootled about for a while with no probs, then switched off to reassemble the machine sans (obviously) faulty CDROM drive.

Went to have a bite to eat, then came back. Switched on and... nuttin!

Invented a few new words and opened the case up again. Checked everything was seated correctly - switched on and got a half-arsed start up. Hah! Thinks me. Bet it's a dodgy PSU (couldn't think why the CDROM drive would trigger it though). Filleted a spare machine and tried again. Computer booted first time.

Wasn't going to get caught out the same way twice so before reassembling switched off for about half an hour then tried again. Guess what?

Well, now I was begining to think it must be a motherboard/cpu problem, and as these are quite old (about 4 years) had a look online, using my normal 'office' machine to see what prices were like, although I didn't really fancy all the hassle of a new install - thankfully Linux - so I thought I'd try a few more checks. After more stops and starts and poking around, I managed to get it to boot up again and went straight to the bios screen to see if that would offer any help. Nothing seemed relevant, so I rebooted to my normal desktop and opened the archiver so I could grab all my 'important' stuff.

Archiver refused! Complained that file dates were in the future! A dim glow of understanding lit in the far reaches of my mind. I checked the system date. It was 1 Jan 1980. With a whoop of satisfaction I pounced on the battery sniggering in the corner. Not the required 3V but 0.2V. With a new battery all is now sweetness and light :)

Good point. The clock memory backup battery is easy to ignore - many folks don't even know it's there.
Can we extrapolate from your story that the realistic life of a typical  real time clock (RTC chip) battery is about 4 years?

Title: Re: Beer & Nuts....
Post by: folderol on November 23, 2010, 09:01:19 PM
What people also don't realise is that the battery also holds all the BIOS settings. I've done a bit more reading and the effects can be even more subtle that I thought.

Modern CMOS ram is actually quite capable of retaining it's values at only 0.2V, but it won't then produce a high enough voltage for logic '1' to be recognised by the rest of the computer.

Now, when a computer starts up the BIOS tries to read the settings, but at the same time the power supply starts providing alternative power to the CMOS chip, taking the load off the battery. Depending on how quickly the computer boots, and how quickly the CMOS supply rises, some of the settings could be read at 'battery' voltage and some at 'PSU' voltage with the erratic and unpredictable results I observed.

The icing on the cake is that with the load taken off it - even though it is tiny - the battery will recover very slightly, so if the machine is switched off then on again relatively quickly there will be just that little bit extra so that full boot might be possible - which again is what I observed. Also, if a partial boot does manage to get as far as the POST screen, then a three finger salute will always manage a reboot, as the power supply will already be operational and the CMOS chip will be at full voltage...

And that ladies and gentlemen of the jury is exactly what happened the last time, and I was able to do a full re-boot and saw that stupid time and date!

Hmm. I wonder if this should be put somewhere it can be seen by other computer victims.

Never being a one for 'fiddling with the gubbins' .... does this mean that, in my almost six year old machine which has never had a battery replacement, if I stick a new one in now I can probably avoid future troubles?
Is this a DIY job?  If so ... where would I find this creature (as one who has never opened the case)?
Would I be better served just taking it to the shop?  Would I be advised to take preventative action before faults develop or wait until things start to go crabby?
 :-X :-\

Hi James.

The battery is the shiny bit in the attached picture (rather caught the camera flash). It's about the size of an old half-crown. At the bottom you can see a clip. You just push that down to release the battery. Almost all reasonably modern machines use this type of battery and holder.

If you do this with the power off, you will lose all your BIOS settings, so if you don't know how to restore them best either get "someone who knows" (tm) to do it or if you're confident do the following.

You can change a battery with the power on if you're careful. With the power off, remove the cover and push aside anything that's in the way of getting to the battery. Plastic clothes pegs are a good way to clip cables back.

Attach some aggressive sticky tape to the battery - a thin strip of gaffer tape is pretty good.

Get comfortable, and switch the computer on.

Press <Del> <F2> or whatever so the the computer goes into BIOS settings (you don't need these, but it's a nice safe state for the computer to sit).

Use a thin screwdriver to push back the clip and lift the battery with the sticky tape.

Release the clip and simply push the new battery into place and you will feel a click as it seats. The clip will then hold it securely.

Do a normal reboot to check all is OK, then shut down to reassemble the case.

As for when to change the battery... how long is a piece of string?

The makers suggest up to 10 years battery life (note the "Up To"). In practice this depends on how old the battery was when it was put into the computer - always an unknown, the percentage of time the computer is off and the type of CMOS chip installed. I was a bit surprised that mine had faded as fast as it had.

With hindsight, I would say change it, or have it changed as soon as you see unusual boot up behavior.

Oops, almost forgot the picture  ::)

Well this last couple of weeks has been mostly cold and wet here, so wet in fact that most of my favorite country walks are too muddy to be enjoyable anymore :(

However, there is some good news, in that this has forced me to look for new places, and although Kent is quite a small county on the map it's certainly big enough when you want to walk!

Now of course, we have lots of small villages and hamlets here, and discovering these (have to park somewhere for the walk) necessarily means also finding country pubs. It would be extremely rude to just pass these by, so I feel obliged to pop in for lunch (all our pubs do food these days) and a beer.

How strange, I seem to have strayed on-topic :)

Hmmm.
Don't get free nuts anymore :(

Today's was an oak framed 13th century inn, which I think still does accommodation but no longer has facilities for horses.

This looks like a fun place for a classy dinner meal.

Actually I found the prices, after converting to USD, about the same for some of the same type of fancy dinning places the wife and I go too. We don’t go fancy too often (note I think fancy is a clean pair of black jeans and a dress shirt, no freaking tie) but when we do that is my type of place.

Prices are about 50% more than the cheapest pubs in Kent, but for that you get:
Full table service, where all the others expect you to order and pay at the bar.
Good quality food, well presented.
Lots of space.
A seemingly unfillable car park!

They are not the least bit stuffy. They welcome hikers, horse riders and motor cyclists as well as the posh lot. They do tend to select where they put you though ;D
