Title: A little something
Post by: folderol on December 22, 2009, 08:49:45 PM
Well, I'm still not getting any new ideas, but while updating my website I came across a few tracks that were showing their age and needed a refresh. This is one of them - now improved a little, and recorded at a higher bitrate. This version uses Zyn. (of course) but also my Sound Canvas, and my old SY35.

I hope you like it.

Sounds big and majestic.
Another proof of the power of Zyn.

I thought it could use a simple slow bass line once the simple percussion kick in ?

Will,

This is a nice cinematic-style journey with a really interesting palette of sounds.
:D

Thanks everyone for your comments.

@Rony
I thought apout adding a bass line, but couldn't think up anything that would really fit, and didn't want to get in the realms of putting something there because it had to have bass.

@Thom
I think it really helps to use different sound sources sometimes (as I've done here). Every one behaves differently and can bring some pleasant surprises. In this case the breathy sound was originally produced by accident. I had Zyn. and the SY35 keyboard on the same MIDI channel :o

@Oren
I can almost visualise a film that this could introduce, but alas, I am no script writer, nor do I have the resources of a big production company!

@Mario
Thanks for your enthusiasm  :-

Very good work.  The synthetic "ahh" choir was well realized for a long set of epic chords.

The subtle drums and high-hats gave it a good tempo, though they were not enhancing the "desert" feel for me.

Personally, I felt more retro-medieval that desert. Something like an early 90s rpg -- maybe Phantasy Star (which also has great music, btw).

The changes at 2:00 onward were excellent! Nothing was ever entirely the same, and the pacing was intriguing. Arrangement wise, you juggle a lot of ideas and improvisations. The devil is in the details, and those can be sorted out later, but for now, I am impressed with the mood you were trying to build.

Just got round to this little beauty .... I'm trying to catch up on stuff I've missed over the past month, or so  ::)

This is such a wonderful piece, Will.  First class.

If you ever decide on that bass line just let me know and I would be more than happy to supply it.  :-*

Well, I was very pleasantly surprised to see this one surface again!

I really don't have anything in mind myself, but if you'd like to try something I'd be very interested to hear it.

The piece is a fairly well controlled 60 bpm, and centers around Am G & F with the occasional C and Bb(something) thrown in.

Well .....

here we go.
It's the best I can manage 'by ear' ..... you certainly have your own individual way with chord patterns  :-X

Anyway .... I had fun with it, and I hope I haven't spoiled it  :-\

That is one wild ride for a bass player - nice job hanging on! :D

Yes. I didn't exactly make it easy ::)

I think James managed the ride rather well. There are some parts where it's spot on, others where maybe not so much, but overall it adds a fresh dimension. To be honest, I didn't think it would be possible to put a bass line in at all :o

It is indeed an achievement to put a bass on this song  :-
Even where it seems a bit off, it adds interesting tension  >:D
