Title: Digitech RP 150 guitar effects processor and pre-amp.
Post by: Oren on January 15, 2010, 01:11:07 AM
Rharv told me about his little RP150, and because my old RP12 is large and sports a built-in expression pedal, I thought it would be cool to have a more portable unit.
Looking around, I found that some of the RP150s were manufactured in the USA, and were solidly built with high quality components, so I found one and took it home. They are no longer in production (replaced by the RP155), but the RP150, RP250, and RP350(all the same specs) can still be found used or as old stock in music stores. The unit is of sufficient quality to last a long time, and be a good choice to purchase used. http://www.digitech.com/products/multi-effects/Flash_Demo/RP150Demo/RP150Demo.php

The bonus: not only does it accomplish everything my old RP12 can do, it also serves as a USB "soundcard". A single high impedance input suitable for electric instruments or a high impedance microphone is split into two 24bit/44.1KHz USB channels out to your DAW, and  two USB channels return, for monitoring from the RP150's headphone output.

And it all works in Linux (Ubuntu Studio 8.04) with no drivers to download. Direct to Audacity, or through the Jack audio connection kit to Ardour or RoseGarden. Multi-tracking, mixing, and audio editing, just like you were working through a high-quality soundcard.

Great effects and a good pre-amp, and some of the Digitech software is developed right here in Victoria, Canada by "3dB Research" http://3dbresearch.com/
And you know how much I like "homegrown" music gear :-

I still have my my BP-50 as fx pedal for my bass and it works great after severall years of usage.
It's cool that the RP150 directly connects in Linux, deserves a hats of for Digitech  :-

Nice little pedal! Digitech still has this one in production - it reminds me very much of my RP 100A. O0

Just re-read this.  Never even considered using the preamps from this unit on a mic.  Cool idea. Thanks!

Let me know what you think of its preamp performance.

Potentially, someone with a laptop (and no special sound card) could use the RP150 to do on-location recordings. Or, just input high impedance instruments and vocals to that laptop, when the home studio computer is not available... O0
