Title: Join us in our first CD project.
Post by: Moon on May 30, 2007, 05:22:14 PM
The Kara-Moon village has grown quiet a lot during the last months. My feeling is, that we have enough talent here to make a Kara-Moon CD.
So why shouldn't we do this: a real pressed  music CD with the best of your songs!

Interrested?

Just give me your feedback so we can see if this is a feasible projet.

Just to give you some more feeling with my ideas:

- Songs should be ready before beginning of September
- Mastering and artwork will be done during the month September
- Production will be done in October
- Shipment will be done in December, ready to put it under the Christmas tree  ;)

This is a non-profit initiative: any profit that will be made from selling this CD will be used for the next year's edition.

Remember that the Kara-Moon community is based on the principle "musicians for musicians" !

Further comments and ideas are welcome !

Moon

it seems a good idea...
Well, I don't know if my hypothetical song will deserve to be on this CD, I don't know. :-\
It is going to be pushed to the higher possible level of professionalism, We'll see how many people are interested in it. (and how many tracks are going to be submitted).
I wait for other members comments

Cheers

P.s. If we manage to keep the price lower we can get more positive response. I can afford it, but... I don't know... maybe it could sound expensive to other people with children... :-[I'm not aware of the current prices for it ???

Me = a real dumb = so stupid
...probably it depends on the number of copies pressed. I think it's better I leave to you the financial side  ;D

Cheers

I'm looking in the cost aspects right now. I already have some price quotes and if we get enough people interested, we might have room to lower the price.
Besides the costs of the pressing, there are also other costs involved (copy right stuff, artwork, mastering...) although I hope to get some "free" assistance here as well.

The first 2 reactions to the polls are already promosing, so let's see if more reactions are comming. I certainly hope so !

There's a spot missing on the poll.
The one for those who are interested in supporting this but can't afford it!
 :-[
It must be over six years since I could afford to but a CD.
I don't bore people with my circomstances but am on ill-health retirement with a 'very' small pension.
Everything I do is through freeware.
I would love to be involved and would offer my support by contributing ARTWORK. I am a (part-time) artist, both brush and mouse.

Is 140 euros like $280 US?

Good news, 140 euro is only 210 dollar  ;)

C'mon boyz, you have to participate to this  ;D
To make this project happen we need at least 10 artists and we have only 3 for the moment  >:(  :)

I think this is a very good idea from Moon and will participate.
I'm discussing this with Moon and we are searching cheaper solutions, so the mentioned prices in the poll is the maximum price of the CD.
We allready found a solution for the artwork for the CD, thanks to ofthewall (thank you very much James)

We also are looking for a volunteer that could master the tracks for free  :-[ This would again bring down the price of the production.

As an artist, I can add some specifications to the project.
All participating artists will receive a written certificate that states :
- You as an artist retains all author and copyrights on your song
- You have the right to publish your contributed song on any other CD that you publish yourself, without any royalties to kara-moon.

If you have any remarks or other questions, just shoot  8)

In order to be included on the CD you have to come up with 120 euros (now that I know what that is!). At that level, I think it will price out a lot of talent that could or maybe should be on the CD. Also, if I committed, I'm really not sure, personally, what I would do with the other 9 CD's

Also, it seems very high overal. I don't think pressing is that expensive including the jewel case and covers. There are some artists on site here. I'm thinking they might give us a big discount if we ask nicely. I'm not sure how much mastering costs, but Blipp is one for sure that has had it done...maybe find out what it cost him.

I hate it when my opinions sound negative, especially in this case as it is a great idea. So I appologize for that. I'm just wondering out loud if its going to work out as currently constituted.

I'd love to purchase at least one CD whether I'm on it or not, and maybe help with a small donation toward the project if it gets off the ground.

I could no-way come up with the needed cash as i'm unemployed.

Have you considered using cafepress?  http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/products/audio

It would mean no money up front and people could buy as many as they wanted. They are'nt pressed cds, but they lazer print the cd and the booklets. I used them for my first cd and "one" has also used them.

Yes Fred i have paid for mastering in the past, but the price has gone up since then.

Post by: Moon on May 31, 2007, 06:26:33 PM
OK, we're doing our research and some maths and came up with a solution!

If we manage to get the mastering done for free, we need 10 artists willing to contribute 80 euro's (that's 108 dollar). This together with the personal sponsoring of Kara and Moon who (40% of the total cost), will cover the expenses for pressing the CD's (we don't want duplicated CD because of the quality issue).  If we're lucky to sell some more CD's, we hope to come to the scenario in 2008 to do this for free !!! But we must get it going the first year.

When we manage to get more sponsors, the price to participate will drop further. So keep following this thread and sign up!

Also, if I committed, I'm really not sure, personally, what I would do with the other 9 CD's

a) Impress some girls
b) Make your mother happy
c) Send it to your local radio
d) Use it as decoration

Serious now: I get your point! We'll keep looking for sponsors and see what we can do to minimize the costs.

First of all, I'm in.

The $120euros is already waiting in my Paypal account, and I've approached rharv about a song for the album. I volunteer to master the finished songs to disc - I've already re-mastered one CD release.

My concern is the environmental impact of all the manufacturing, packaging and shipping entailed in traditional music distribution.

This crew has a tremendous amount of technological know-how, and I feel we can assemble an "album" of excellent music mastered to high bit-rate compressed format, and make it available for download to anyone who wants to sample what the Kara-Moon community can do. We can be the originators of a new trend in digital music distribution, that I feel will eventually be the industry standard. I'm happy to master the submitted .WAV files to MP3 or ogg vorbis, and this format will allow us to present many more tunes for our prospective audiences enjoyment.

If Great-aunt Matilda wants a disc in her Christmas stocking, just convert her favourite tracks to .WAV files, and burn her a copy. Put some original artwork on the disc, or perhaps someone here can create a downloadable CD cover and disc art package that would work on the average laser printer.

It only makes sense to do what we do best, and create a web-based offering - the first of many.

Your thoughts?

I like the idea of a web-based offer although a traditional product has got positive sides: quality of the product (artwork), suitable for a gift, I don't feel a self-mastered disc with printed cover could be used as a formal gift in many occurrences, apart from friends. On the other side the easy distribution issue with the downloading must be considered, too.
I think we should think of the possibility of using both.  ???

Let's wait other opinions  :-\

Cheers

I would too, except my wife doesn't impress easily, and the fun with the "girls" will be over once they see me ;D

Rony & Moon; I haven't really changed my position/opinion; but if you get nine, I'll be the 10th and throw in for the 108 bucks to get it off the ground.

Good news !!!

Yesterday, I've invited some associates to a restaurant. We discussed many things, and we also talked on what I was doing with the Kara-Moon project. I won't bother you with the details, but we finished with a very nice deal: I'm going to build a forum for them (which got nothing to do with music) and they will sponsor part of our CD project. Kara and myself already agreed to sponsor a part of the project as well, and Oren is also helping. All together, we allready have around 75% of the budget we need to get this going and I'm still waiting some feedback from other people I know.

Meaning: we have a CD project:
- Artist can participate for free ! They will also get 1 CD for free.
- We are going to set up a downloadable version of the CD for our members: for free !
- People who want a real CD with finished artwork can order one for the very democratic price of 8 euro / 10.75 dollar
- Sponsor in return will get CD's they can offer to their relations: meaning our music will be heared outside this forum!

I really did my best to find the best formula for this initiative. I am now hoping for many artists to join this project and will open a thread where you can sign up!

Way to stick with it Moon.
I'm willing to help with mastering too.
Also will work with Oren on getting a song ready for it.
I also have a couple ideas for marketing this project, let me see how it goes..
may just have wings. End result would promote both this site and the artists..

I'm thinking I'll have some free time here shortly to toy with this.

I know that it is maybe late. Is there a chance to join this project?
With some personal music, of course.
Beggining with July, my spare time will grow significantly, so I'll got plenty of it to contribute to this.

waiting for a (positive) answer  ;D

Well, a CD has 74 minutes of music, and I'm not sure that there will be space for an extra song, but in case there is, you'll get the bonus track  ;)

I'll give you access to the board and hope to hear a first version of your contribution very soon  ;)

Hi Moon,

i'm also interested in participating with a song (no noise ;)), if there will be enough space on the disk. Karinox could do some artwork and we would buy some disks too, no matter if i'm on the disk or not.

Great idea!

thanks

Hi Mellotronaut,

Great to join us! I'll give you access to the "In a spin" board where you can join the project.

In the mean time, the ideas for the "Kara-Moon-Collective" CD keep growing. We're going to make a "real" CD and next to that a dedicated section about Kara-Moon-Collective on the site where people can download all the songs of of Kara-Moon-Collective, including some extra's like bonus tracks (the ones that didn't fit within the 74 minutes). So in any way, you're song will become part of this project!

Moon

Hi Moon,

Great!
I'm very happy to join in. I'll do a fresh new song for it. ;D
What about the artwork? Do you need help? Karin is a photographer and she could design a cd-cover or put a nice photo in.

This is what we used in the kvr-submission thread this month:
