Yes I'm in.
Actually Fred and I have decided to do a collab. So that's only one track for the both of us. If you want however I can always provide a second solo piece.

Just curious: what rules (except for of course not containing any copyrighted materials) will the tracks have to commit to? I'm thinking mainly of length issues such as minimum and maximum duration.

Good question I've allready discussed this with Moon
At the moment we have 13 participants and at a certain time, we will have to close the participation treat.
So basically the limit is the length of the CD, which is less then 70 minutes if I remember.
I would propose that the max. length would be under 5 min.

Any toughts on this ?

No real minimum, as long as the song stands on it's own. I know great songs that only last 2 minutes. Do bear in mind that the song should be "complete".

Between 2 and 5 minutes sounds perfect. I had an idea which would be cool if it would work (although I can see a lot of potential problems in practice) is if we could also include a longer piece of, say, 10 minutes that was created by as much of the other contributers as possible. Say, everyone makes something of 1-2 minutes that has to be in a certain range of tempos and includes several bars for fading in and out. Someone else could then build on that and deliver it to the next one. In the end, you should have a composition flowing from one contribution right into the next and hopefully working as a track in itself too. I think it would be important to do this one after another in order to avoid ending up with ten very different and hard to combine tracks.

Well, we can do this as an extra track. If you can find people to join you in this idea, then please do ahead. But do try to make this sound like a whole. Perhaps starting with a simple beat or track of 10 minutes and then letting the song filled in by others might be a way to get this starting.

I propose you make the kcick-off and see how far we get with this one marc  ;)

It certainly is a good idea, but as you said yourself this won't be easy...
I've heard a couple of collab song like this and very often it ends up as... well a bunch of tracks of the same theme glued on after the other but with no real consistency.
This will need very good coordination and strict decisions, if the submitted track doesn't fit the song, it'll be a no go for it  :o

Yes, it certainly will be a challenge ! I wouldn't build it minute after minute. Try picturing building a house: you don't build one room after the next, but begin with the fundament, some walls, etc... So, first a simple skeleton and than everybody gets 1 to 2 minutes to fill the song up. Yes, it might certainly work.... I'm very curious...  ;)

Are we talking about a concept-album ?  :-\

No !!!! Absolutely not !!!

Artist have the freedom to do what they do best. No restrictions, remember !
But do respect copyright issues.

Marc's idea was to make 1 long song with many artists here. If this works out well, we'll put it as the one song which can last 10 minutes.

But it has to be a good song  ;)

I don't think 10 minutes would be required either, if people do the parts they are best at...add ambient keyboards,  a few guitar fills, etc. rather doing a whole section.

Actually, I still think that it would be cool to keep the different sections seperate and up to each contributor, kind of like those stories where one writer starts, the next one continues and the next one continues until you end up with a complete story with hopefully some cool twists.

I do understand all the potential issues though. Maybe it's better to try and do something like this as a side-project to the whole cd thing and when it does work, maybe include it on the next one.

If no one has a problem with that, I have no problem running this project and mixing the final result. I do run a tight ship, though! ;)

Well raise the sail and get her floating then. Oren is already pushing our song along, got his base tracks. Let's get this one moving right away too.
Batten down the hatches! You're in for a ride.

To all participants: there is a new categorie and board for the CD project. This board is restricted to all participants who needs to exchange info and feedback.

Just look under the categorie "Kara-Moon-Collective" and the board "In a spin".

The CD project is officially launched !!!   ;D

Just look under the categorie "Kara-Moon-Collective" and the board "In a spin".

May I suggest that as each artist (or collaborative team) starts the thread for their song in the new "In a Spin" forum, that we use the song title as the subject heading? This will keep the whole area nicely organized, and make it easy for participants to locate the thread for a particular song.

Oren.
