Title: ZynAddSubFX patches
Post by: folderol on July 28, 2007, 02:22:25 PM
Would anyone be interested in the instrument patches I've created for Zyn. ?

If so where would be the best place to put them?

There are about 60 of them ranging from soft, smooth pads to extreme chromatic percussive sounds and overdrive effects.

I keep a copy zipped (so they can be read by all platforms) on my own website so can easily transfer them.

I would certainly like to have them, Zyn is together with Crystal one of best soft synth's in the world IMHO
How big is the zip file ?

If it is to big for upload I'll ask Moon to give you ftp access

It really compresses very small, about 150k, so I'll just attach it here.

I don't know where the banks are put on windows versions, but in Linux all you need to do is unzip and copy the entire directory into your user banks directory.

Hey thanks a lot, i will certainly use them

BTW same principle under win, or if you save them elsewhere, you just add the path to the settings

I'm pleased to hear that. I'd very much like to hear your opinion on them.

Incidentally in my recent posting 'Lost' only the Reed harmony in the 3rd verse does NOT use an instrument from this collection :)

I know that I'm sometimes VERY,VERY slow but I rarely forget something...  ;)

I have a problem with those instrument on my linux configuration, the instruments don't work.

Here is what I did :
created a directory Folderol in my banks directory
unzipped all instruments in that directory

now in zyn, they show up as a separate bank 'folderol', which is good. But when i load an instrument the sound isn't loaded ?
to investigate what was happening, i choosed 'load instrument' and there i got the error 'could not load instrument' on every file of you ? works fine with other instrument files....

any ideas ?

Tro,

 You're a ZynAddSubFX user? Do you work with a Linux operating system? If so, which one?

That is a great synth, and someday I'm going to learn how to use it ;D

...cya,

Oren.

(Kara, I tried to implement the infamous Folderol instruments a few months ago with no success. I'm going to need a "Folderol for Dummies" step-by-step instructional to get those beauties installed correctly :D)

@kara
I think you may have 'over' unzipped.

If you put the zip file through whatever archive program you are using you should end up with a directory called 'Collection' inside that are all the files in compressed form. They should stay compressed as Zyn uncompresses them 'on-the-fly'.

If in doubt unzip the file from a terminal window simply using:
  unzip {filename}

Rename the whole folder to what you want then drag/copy it into your Zyn. banks folder.
Restarting Zyn. should make them accessible

@Oren
I didn't realise you had trouble with them as well :(
I shall re-check the file isn't borked.

Damn Colonials!  ;D

OK. I just downloaded and checked the file. It seems OK but is quite a bit out of date. Here is the latest one.

@LR
Please try it do. It has its annoyances but produces some most beautiful sounds.

Ladies and Gentlemen I need some help here.  I Dled the Windows version of ZynAddSubFX, at least I think it’s the Win version, uncompressed it and ran the launch_zynaddsybfx.bat file.  Of course it come back saying there is no zynaddsybfx.exe file and there isn’t one.  There is no win executable file in the DL.

Does this still work with Windows XP?
Did I get the right DL?
Is anyone using this in XP?
Is there a secret to this?

Thanx in advance for your time - MarioD

Mario - I had no idea there was a windoze version :o  Keep plugging friend, it'll come around for you forthwith....
                                          ....as long as it's not borked, of course :;

Good news - I found the Zyn bank :)

My computer tells me I (ya, me :-\) am not authorized to write to this folder.

Yep. It will do that :)

The default banks are in a non-user area.

What you need to do is to create a new directory called 'banks' in your home directory (or in some little corner of it). Copy/move my collection (or any other collection you want) into that. Then, in Zyn go to :
File>Settings

Select the tab 'Bank root dirs'

Click 'Add root directory

It will probably give you your home directory as an option and from there you can browse to where the collection is.

File name should end up something like :
/home/oren/banks

and the only object in the main window should be 'Collection'
Hit OK, then close and restart Zyn. (the change is only effective when you restart)

If you now go to :
Instrument>Show Instrument Bank

and click on the down arrow 'Collection' should be there.

Finally, if you want to save any instruments you create yourself, you need to make this banks directory the default one (in Bank Root Dirs) so that you save to a writable area! Zyn will allow you to create new directories in this where you can save your own priceless instrument masterpieces ;D

No, that wasn't finally, this is finally:

To make life easy for myself I actually copied all the default banks and presets into my userspace, made it the default, then deleted all the other options from the banks and presets entries.

Priceless pearls of wisdom, dispensed with style.

You're the source, man ;)

How's it going?

I can’t get the vst version to work at all.  Don’t know why yet.

I got the ASIO stand-alone version to work BUT there is over a second latency between hitting a key and hearing the sound.  This is with the ASIO latency set at 9ms!  Don’t know why yet either.

Wow! That is seriously bad :o

I'm afraid I can't suggest anything, except to do a bit of Googling or check out KVR

Folderol, I got everything working.  Both the ASIO and the VSTi are up and running.

A google search led me to a batch program that allows the synth to sync with my soundcard ASIO settings.  Actually there was one in the original DL but it was called *DeBug.dll.  I thought that was a trouble-shooting program  >:(

Anyway I’ve got your patches, as well as the original patches, up and running.  Very good job on your patches!  This is a very good sounding softsynth for sure.

Gotta run now.  Too many sounds and so little time  ;D

Thanx again - MarioD

Excelent news :-

Best set time limits for playing with the sounds though ::)

Will,

I'm going to tuck those custom patches away (along with your instructions for deployment) until I've got Ardour and Hydrogen firmly in place. Then, a look at JAMin to see if it would, in fact, be a better choice than Audacity for mastering.

Then it will be time for Rosegarden and ZynAddSubFX, at which time I'll launch your collection while setting up the new "banks" folder.

It could be a while..... ::) ;D
