Title: An Idea for An Additional Thread....
Post by: elwoodblues1969 on August 05, 2007, 02:25:22 PM
There is a keyboard forum that has an area specifically for the purpose of sharing photos of people's studios & gear which I thought was a fun concept.

I thought it would be a cool idea to have that here in this forum.

I am curious to know if this would spark any interest amongst this crowd here?

I was going to set up an artist page for just this purpose.

Looking at pictures of studios is allways fun  ;D

Which remembers me that I have to clean up my studio, it is a real mess at the moment. Nobody wants to see a studio like that...  :-[

This is a good idea.
I'll kick off with a pic that I took a few weeks ago for a friend.....but since then I've inherited an old Roland KR-650 so have now re-arranged everything.

Have to take some more pics.

Ok, I guess I can embarrass myself here as well as any other place..
All cabinets, desks in pictures I built myself to accomodate my stuff (I'm a carpenter for steady pay, musician/engineer for extra$$)

My main mixxing station, where I do most of my work-
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t199/rharv/mixstation.jpg)

Here's where I shove my guitar, bass and boards into when they are not pulled out for use; I call it my corner mess-
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t199/rharv/cornermess.jpg)

My main mixer station-
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t199/rharv/mixxercaddy.jpg)

and the mastering cabinet in the other room (extremely load and clear)-
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t199/rharv/mastercab.jpg)

and last for now is my beat up Steinberg-
(http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t199/rharv/steinberg.jpg)

Hey, I have fun with it all..
We started a topic down in the hardware area of what kinds of gear we use/own. Maybe these should get combined somehow..I'll leave the horns and older keys out of this one.

Woah,I did not expect the studio & gear photo section to start here,as I meant starting a whole new category for it-but this is cool...a good place as any I guess. 8)
I might as well throw my gear on here as well.

I refer to my set up as a studio, but technically-it is not one,as you can see-I'm still working on it :D

OK, how are you guys doing the thumbnail-to-full size picture links?
I haven't figured that out here.
Are you actually doint the html code or is there a shortcut I'm missing here?
If you are doing the actual code I already know how to do that, but it appears there's a shortcut in the software here (?)..
I was lazy and just linked the pics from photobucket.com.

Looks like some nice monitors there elwoodblues.
I did one of those 'down the keyboard' shots too! I like that perspective.
Havin fun and lovin' it.

Rharv,

It's real simple what I've done with my pics, actually.I just uploaded from my camera using the Camera Wizard program that came with my pc & I put the photos in my documents folder.
Then it was just a matter of extracting my photos from my folder using the additonal options & presto! ;D

Yeah, I absolutely worship my Adam A7 monitors & I could write an essay here,as to why I think they are the most stellar monitors on the market for the price, but I'll leave that description for the hardware section. 8)

While I think they are a bargain for what they do,they would not be considered as budget speakers by some, due to thier price tag of a grand per pair.

Well,I'm tickled to see my suggestion of this thread taking flight...hope to see alot more photos down the road ;)

Thanks for sharing the photos..man, don't be embarrassed, you did a nice job on the furniture, (before I became a vagabond house carpenter, my apprenticeship was in furniture making.)

Whats embarrassing is to be a carpenter and have studio furniture out of a box from Office Depot!  ;D

I'll post some pictures too, in the year 2012, when I finally get around to cleaning up the messes!!

Ok..until I get rid of the paperwork pinned all over my walls, this will have to do!

Heres a photo of my "instant studio" ..set up overnight after over a year on the road:

..this was taken before everything was in there..before it got truly choked with multi-level cardboard boxes.

..added a  Custom Shop Stratocaster:

..and then there is the "drum machine" :

..now I have a studio filled up with fancy office furniture my Lady bought me so that I wouldn't have to take time from other projects to build furniture for myself. I have so much stuff in here now that I have had to save a path to walk through!

Well the pictures sure make it look neat and clean. Looks like you have plenty of room and some nice toys.
Hope you get plenty of time to enjoy them.

I had to go back in time to get photos of it when it was still that neat!

..the first morning I woke up in this house, my first recording session was in an empty garage..nice ambiance for the harp!

..and gratefully, I do get time to enjoy it all. Thanks for your comments.

Well, in keeping with my equipment, my erm, studio is pretty minimalist. It's actually the dining room (2nd reception in estate-agent-speak) that has taken me 7 years to fail to decorate! I'm sure my setup will make you all feel a lot better :)

Yes, that is a real record player! Home built in the 1970s and I use it as a monitor amp. It has a built-in stack of rechargables so I run it with the power cord unplugged when recording (no earth loops). You can just see one of the speakers - also home built at the same time, and sitting on top of it is my headphone amp. This is much more modern c.1980 :)

The Monitor sits on my Sound Canvas, and the little box over the synth (SY35) is a pair of fully isolated DC supplies for the both the synths.

The computer is hidden under the table and is the only point of earthing. It has a dual-core athlon.

The big window in the display is the Rosegarden main window. The larger Square one is ZynAddSubFX main window. The small square one is Time Machine. The meter display is configured for VU mode and gives very close approximation to what real analog meters do.

Folderol,

Very serviceable recording set-up. I could work with that! And a set of AKGs to wrap around the ears. Very complete  8).

Thom,

Looks like you have a lot of fun in there, fella  :D.

Oren;

I have a reasonable amount of fun in this room, but once I apply some sound isolation materials..well..the fun could be infinite. ;D

Kara;

I look forward to your future pic postings. :)

Termoblue;

Thanks for your comment & I hope you participate in the posting of pics,as I am curious as to the interior decorating habits of Germans. ;)
Would an art deco motif in a Berlin home be considered subversive? ;D

I must say.. I'm fairly jealous of you all, though Fold made me feel a little better. :P

My 'studio' *or extreme lack there of* consists completely of my computer, the only speakers I have are my ancient and rather inadequate head phones, heh, not to mention I currently have NO sound card..

:(

Buzz and I have some good times, but I'd sure love some of the toys you folks tote.

-Servetus

p.s. I'm learning (spanish) classical guitar too, so I have a guitar, but it will be another year before I record anything. Hoping to take jazz lessons too.

im actually in the start phase of building my studio.  We just bought our first house in May.  The basement is unfinished.  I thought what a nice blank slate I can do anything I want.  What I didnt think of was how time consuming and mentally draining it is.... Plus I miss my piano.  Havent had the 88 key set up in over a month.  The Laundry room is close second priority.
Some photos of the house projects in my space if you partake in that sort.

behind this curtain is an unfinished studio.  Your more than welcom to come help make it look like the Abbey Road control room. ;)

Hi Nick,

Checked out your project & it really looks like you will have your hands full for a while. :o
I can relate to how mentally draining projects like that are.I've done some remodeling work in some apartments I've lived in & I lived in quite a few different ones!
I must say though, there is nothing like having a blank slate to work with, especially since you don't have the stress of sharing a wall with a neighbor and having to worry about disturbing them-that's the worst mental drain of all! :P

There are sound isolation materials that I can assemble over my apartment walls for privacy, but a project like that would run into the thousands just for the material alone. :o

On a different note,I purused some of your tunes & the spin off of the Spiderman theme is cool. 8)
I really liked the "Poem about then" and "Saw Chunks",as they were arranged beautifully & they have a nice Yan Hammer quality to them-good guitar work too!

The best of luck with your project & new studio. :)

Kind regards,

Thom

At last I'm getting sorted after that hard-drive crash.  Man, it takes some work to get everything put back together!!  ::)

So here are some updated pics that reflect the recent changes. The old Roland KR-650 was inherited from a friend who is upgrading so the whole (tiny) corner in my attic had to be re-arranged to suit.  8)

You can always tell the difference between someone who reads music,as supposed to someone who plays by ear-just by all the paperwork laying around. ;D

Your black keyboard is interesting enough, but I can't tell what brand it is. ???
My cats help me keep my place tidy,as if I had that many wires draped all over the place-my cats would flag everything down to the floor,so I have to stay organized to cat-proof my place. :)

Post by: kara on August 21, 2007, 07:50:36 PM
You are right Elwood, I can play anything from a partition, keyboard & bass. But I'm a disaster in playing by ear, you wouldn't like to  have me in your band  :o ;D

The pic, where the windcontroller is laying on the seat, is the ladies corner... she plays sax, windcontroller, clarinet and flute... and she sings. She has what you call perfect pitch, the only paper she needs it to write the notes down for me  ::)

The black keyboard is a GEM SK760 arranger keyboard. I used it for years on live gigs. Very solid, ones dropped in on the stairs and once the keyboard stand collapsed under it during a live gig  ::)
It's still in perfect shape. I don't use the sounds a lot anymore but I'm so used to the keyboard that I use it as a master keyboard.

The red one you must have recognized by his colour, it's a Clavia Nord Modular G2X. My workhorse, I create allmost every sound with it.

k

Hmm perhaps I should get a cat  :-\

Speaking of durable & resilliant gear that keeps on ticking after it's been dropped, this is a very integral part of my home studio-the Edirol R1 compact flash field recorder.
It's a bit pricey, compared to what hand held field recorders go for now,but nonetheless,a worthy recording tool.

@Kara,    :o

The story of the acoustic bass.  :o

Being a poverty-stricken sort of chap I do a lot of trading, both buying and selling, at local 'flea-markets' and such places.  One day last year when I walked in to the local market I saw this guitar leaned against the back of a market stall. It had no strings, no bridge, no nut and no frets,......but was beautiful!!
When I asked 'how much?', the trader said..........£15....(€22 !!).......needless to say, I didn't even haggle this time.  Just payed the cash and departed!!
When I got home to check it out, it turned out to be an unfinished home-made job. Very well constructed with a lot of inlay detailing, but for whatever reason had not been completed.
I made a nut and a bridge, then researched how to do a fret job (the grooves were already cut), but when I discovered how much this would cost, along with the amount of work involved I thought.....fretless....... so I put a set of strings on and .....WOW.......amazing!  :o
It is a wonderful instrument.  The only 'small' drawback is that, to gain the most benefit from the fretless action, particularly when miked up for recording, it should have smooth tapewound strings.  I'm afraid that these would be a total extravagance for me, at the price they are, so I have to make do with a 'noisy' action!  ::)  Small price to pay.  ;)
