Title: An odd situation.
Post by: folderol on December 03, 2022, 09:20:59 PM
I've come up with the words to a song, but...
While it scans fine as spoken word, I can for the life of me find a tune to fit it.
So anyone want to have a crack at it?

There's an old dog sitting by the door,
Scratching at it with a shaky paw.
Telling me it's time to get about,
Have breakfast, then we're going out.

It's five long years to the day,
Since you up'ed and just went away.
We don't know what we did so wrong,
But miss you since you've been gone.

We ain't got so many years to go,
And think that's something you should know.
So please come back to us again,
And take us away from all this pain.

I could do that no bother, Will.
Right now, though, I'm out of action due to the dreaded flu !
Never felt this bad. Can hardly speak nor breathe and am just generally laid low.
If nobody comes up with a tune for you I'll have a go whenever I get back a modicum of real life, mate.

Oh,   hope so. Had it over a week now and it ain't easing off!

When you wrote these words did it bring any style to mind?
On each read-through I give it speaks to me of ole-timey front porch music.
Pickin' a banjo in a lazy 6/8 time.
Couple more verses or a chorus might be nice, if'n ya have them in you?

James, I hope you are feeling better soon. The flu over on this side of the pond is very bad, lots of people in the hospitals.

Will, you would not want to hear me sing so I will pass.

@ James
Yes that's pretty much the style.
I'll try and think up a chorus - shouldn't be to difficult (he said hesitantly)

@ Mario
Join the club!

I haven't forgotten this, but have been a bit tied up getting all my ducks in a row for my next bandcamp album (Yay!) oh and fixing up some cold spots in the house (Boo!)

No hurry here.
Had this flu now for two weeks and still not pulling round!

Sorry to hear this. Flu can indeed last a long time unfortunately. All you can do is keep warm and drink plenty of water.

Hope you're on the mend James.
Oh and I have a chorus :)

Chorus
Please come back again real soon,
We'd both be right over the moon.
Don't leave us here all alone,
In our sad and oh-so lonely home.

Thanks.
Managed to struggle up to a half-hour studio time today so I may be able to get started on this one soon.

Let me know if you want the full WAV or any separate parts to play with. All available.
Enjoyed this. Thanks.

James, you have a winner here!

Superb instrumentation and vocal.

You and Will are the new dynamic duo :;

YES!
I like this :D
Especially the harmonising on the chorus.
If possible, can you let me have the individual tracks? There are some small adjustments I'd like to make as well as possibly adding to it.

Thanks for the kind words, both.
I'll pack the files up tomorrow and pop'em on GDrive for you, Will.

Will.
Everything stuffed into a GoogleDrive folder for you to play with and sent to your e-mail.
You should've been granted access to it but let me know if you have problems.
Also let me know when you have it all downloaded so I can delete to keep space free.
Please feel free to do whatever you fancy with it.
Thanks for allowing me to play.

Not only downloaded, but stored on two different computers and a backup SSD :)

Made a bit of a start on this, but mostly just getting everything together in the editor I use.
I've done a bit of filtering on the main vocal as it has a pronounced hump around 200Hz. I don't know if that's a room mode, or proximity effect of the mic (more noticeable on some mikes), but combined with the other tracks which also had content in that region, it was making things a bit 'muddy'.

I've also done some stereo positioning.

To be continued :)

Well, it took a while, but here we go.
First of all, as I mentioned I filtered out a resonance in the main vocal, I then widened the stereo positioning so it would like there are 5 distinct 'players' with just the main singer/guitarist in the centre.

I then had lots of fun trying to balance the levels - not easy when the parts are mostly in different parts of the spectrum.

As for adding anything myself, well I couldn't find anything that actually added to the song rather than detracting from it, so it's still all your work James :)

Nice clean-up and mixing job, Will.
The only thing that isn't to my taste is the vocal levels.
I like an upfront vocal but feel that in this instance they are too pronounced, particularly the chorus back-ups.
Just my taste, of course. All else sounds nice and *live*.
Pity you didn't have anything to add.

Great job gentlemen :;

To nitpick I think the harmonica should come up in volume.  I would like it to be around the same volume as James vocals.  The rest of the song sounds great. YMMV
