I must say I wouldn't normally work like that either - it was just for fun really.

However, I do sometimes drop some programs (that need to run but don't usually need to be visible) onto other desktops, then just switch desktops when I need to do anything to them.

Something went wrong with Ardour....
I had a project with 8 tracks and around 20 plugins on different tracks....

I think you can't use vst with Ardour, do you mean native ardour plugins or Au ?
I'm trying to learn things about linux...

In linux you have a whole collection of LADSPA plugins, they are the equivalent of vst's in window but are native to the operating system.

Did you find out what the problem was that lost your project?

With some help from #irc I've solved the problem with Jamit.
It was actually a problem of xconfig 
Strange how a video setting can mess up with audio but it works now 

Again one step forward !

ok, an update after playing with the new daw today...

....
The mastering software Jamit is unusaeble on my laptop, when i load it together with ardour and connected trough jack, i get CPU spikes of 100 % and the whole user interface gets incredible slow...
Connected with audacity trough jack it is a 'litle' bit better but still unusable.

My Ardour instructions tell me it is possible to use VST plugins when a tool called VSTbridge is placed in the plugins folder. There are so many useful LADSPA plugins, I have not yet tried the VSTbridge
