Who? Me?

WWW
« on: March 21, 2008, 05:22:05 PM »

A few days ago I made (another) attempt to clear the attic. Fetching down a couple of old and dusty computers I was surprised when a floppy popped out of one of them. Not expecting much, I stuck it in my current machine and found precisely one MIDI file on it.

How it came to be there I shall never know, but I was quite excited when I realised it was the original live-played recording of my tune 'Reflections'. This has had a number of incarations over the years, but it was a strange experience hearing it as I first concieved it. Inevitably I started playing with it, and now I think I've got it to a higher standard than I've achieved before. I should probably leave it for a few days before making a final listen with any adjustments, but would like the group's opinons.

As a matter of interest I've also attached the original MIDI file, which was played with a vibraphone voice.

Edit

There is a 'middle-aged' version on my website at http://www.musically.me.uk/music/Reflections.mp3

Edit 2
I think I might have confused some people Huh

The attachment Reflections.mp3 is the newest version.
The link above to my website is an older version
The attachment REFLECT.MID is the very oldest MIDI file.

Very nice, atmospheric melody, Will.
It reminds me of an old standard, something like 'Oh How We Danced' (?)
Well rescued, I think.

Again, a very lovely atmosphere with a very interesting and well-played lead.

I also liked the flow of this one,

This is a keeper for sure.

Thanx for rescuing and sharing this one!

Very very nice !
It sounds like it's all played and none sequenced.
There are many details and subtle nuances and expressive playing and emotional melodies.
I really enjoyed it. I'm glad you attached the midi file... Wink
it was interesting to see where this track comes from

Thumbs up

Cheers

@kara

I'm very happy you like that version, but a little surprised you prefer it to the latest one.

Another example of a very humane musical sensibility expressed in synthetic sounds. The "Folderol Zone" leaves its mark once again.... Wink

Hi Folderol,
what a nice piece of music. Very relaxing and moody. I am also very impressed with the ebb and flow of the notes/timing (that Wyatt mentioned).  Grin

Thanks a lot MAD.

When I compose highly melodic tunes I like to play as much of it as possible live (at least the melody line) to try and get the most expression into the music that I can. It usually works, but then it's a nightmare getting backing tracks to sync Roll Eyes

Today I've started polishing this one after leaving it a few days. I'll probably put the latest version up tonight or tomorrow. So far, I've changed the first lead for something nearer a flute, added depth to the string section and more detail to the choir.

You woudn't know this, but I expect the others are quite bored of hearing me say this uses only one synth - ZynAddSubFX Grin

OK here is the latest version. I'd be happy with any suggestions for further improvements before I put it to bed.
