Who? Me?

WWW
« on: July 28, 2008, 10:39:50 PM »

At one time i used to leave a keyboard switched on whenever I was home. This meant that I could get something down immediately if I had an idea. This resulted in dozens of short recordings of random bits of melody and became quite overwhelming.

This particular tune was another of my 2am rambling inspirations from way back - the original file date is 1994! Over the last few weeks I've been playing it though, bum notes, timing errors and all, to pick out the best parts of it.

Now I've made a completely fresh recording using Zyn (of course) and think it's ready for a first airing. I'd be grateful for any suggestions, particularly regarding the instrumentation. I've a feeling there isn't enough variation, but that could be just because I've had my nose too close to it!

<edit>

Hmmm, looking back I seem to have been unusually busy this month Grin

If you have a poem, I have a tune, and we exchange these, we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.

Will,

I think this piece is a very well contructed song-has an Enya flavor to it.I don't see anything else that can be done with this...this song was aged to perfection and it's ripe & ready to serve. Cool

Cheers,

Thom

Great relaxing piece Will
I actually don't think that it lacks variation, but perhaps it could use vocals.
If you would be interested in french vocals I could ask Azell to write them and sing them ?

Just ducky as is, professor...
....changing to a different melody instrument for a few bars mid-song would provide added interest, but that's a superfluous trifle (or would that be truffle....?).

Splendid piece of music

Thanks again,

I'd like to hear what Azell can do with this. It's in Bm at the moment. I chose that key for best range and tonal balance of 'instruments'. Would that be OK?

... Can we have a translation into English as well? Wink

Ta mate Cool

It was a mid 'verse' change I was thinking about, but now I'm not so sure. I'll let it 'season' for a few day, then maybe just touch up the vibraphone in a couple of places where I got a bit heavy handed with the {ahem} mallets. I also thought about tidying up some of the timing, but now I think it's actually better to leave the natural variations after all.

This is another wonderful piece, my man.

I like it as it is. The timing variations are super. I agree with Kara that it could make a lovely song.
You certainly have a way with tune construction, sir.

Woo, more replies

Thanks a lot James, but don't you think you should keep your hat on ... or change your barber Grin

Thanks also to Wyatt for your support.

That's great  Smiley Cheesy Grin

After what everyone has said here is the final clean instrumental version. I've made very few real changes.
I altered the backing synth so it had a fuller sound but lost the low frequency growl that appeared occasionally. I've reduced the velocity of a (very) few notes of the vibraphone (mostly at the start). I've re-balanced the whistle so it is clearer in the bridge section but more subdued for the last verse.

All the rest of the dynamics I've left severely alone, but made a clean recording direct from Zyn. to a wav file.

I think that this should be a *collective* piece for September.
It would make a great song for Azell. I can hear Kara play a superb bass line in this. I would love to do a guitar and/or whistle part to it.
Overall, this could be your masterpiece, young folderol!!

An excelent idea ! We could record it live
Azell is writing some lyrics for it at the moment.
Will, do you have a chord chart for this, or do I have to find out myself?

k
