I'm always on the lookout for unique sample-based sounds-particularly electric guitars.Though my Reason 4 software has some very nice ones & a pretty fair selection of them,it would also be nice to have an arsenal of e.guitars in my hardware set up as well.
Originally-upon it's release, the Roland Fantom G was a monumentally over-priced disappointment sound wise(ROM),however though...the Fantom G series has come down in price(about $300) and in addition to this,I thought that given time,Roland would expand their selection of ARX expansion cards.
Unfortunately though-as it is now,Roland only has 2 ARX sound cards; brass instruments and drums....and they are $449 a piece....is Roland smoking crack!!??
The good news is,is that there's still a good alternative to accessing Roland's expansion cards and that would be,via the RolandJuno G.The Juno G shares the same sound engine as the old Fantom X series,so Roland's old SRX expansion cards can be used in the Juno G and best of all,is that there is a vast assortment of the SRX line of expansion cards.I am very pleased to discover that the Juno G is still in production,as dramatically unlike the Fantom G,the Juno G is a tremendous value, very much like my Korg M50 is.
I am also very excited to learn that the Juno G has a new OS update, which transforms the Juno G into a full blown sampler, complete with DAW style editing!! Cheesy
The Juno G has been around for about 3 years now and for those who are unfamiliar with this synth,it's a nifty little recording studio that's jam-packed into a compact 61 note keyboard that has 16 midi tracks of recording,4 audio tracks, sampling with in depth editing,64MB of ROM providing 1,024 presets,an awfully large LCD display(given the Juno's compact size),microphone input and an optional library of SRX sounds that are surprisingly good in sample & synth quality.
I'm not sure how much longer the Juno G will be in production,so I actually might buy the Juno G before I make a move on the upcoming Kurzweil PC3LE.

I've always been a fan of Roland and owned a couple of synth's of them in the past... although that I agree, they are making a couple of strange decisions nowadays.

But as for guitar sounds, I've learned one thing : If you need a guitar sound, forget synths and ask a guitar player  Grin

Found a really cool 3rd party website that has sound expansions for the Juno G at very reasonable prices! Cool

I recently discovered a couple more juicy tidbits of info in regard to the Juno G's features....stereo WAV files can be imported into the Juno and the SRX expansion cards are made in conjunction with Spectrasonics-so you know the SRX sounds are going to be top notch!

Thom,

I think Bob Harvey (rharv) uses the Juno G as his principal hardware synth. It is his most recent addition. He favours Roland in general.

Bob is a self-employed building contractor and is finishing a course in website design. (When he's not recording/mixing/mastering music) Add a wife and two daughters to the mix, and you got
.... no time for playing on the web... Cheesy
