"
This month's theme asks you to honor the great musical mind(s) that are no longer with us."
Jim Croce
January 10, 1943 – September 20, 1973
One of the great singer/songwriters of the early 70’s, Croce and his guitar picking partner, Maury Muehleisen were both killed in a plane crash.
Although they had had limited exposure over here in the UK a couple of radio jocks of the day took up the cause and promoted ‘the late Jim Croce’ to make him almost a household name after his death.
His whole style of songwriting and acoustic guitar playing had a huge influence on my own musical development.
This is a song written in his style.
The lyrics were donated to me by a very good friend. Been so long I scarce remember
I wasn’t much for listening then
Seems like 40 years ago last November
But life has made me think again
Its paying all the prices after
That’s really got the best of me
The party’s over, so’s the laughter
What was it I couldn't see?
My daddy used to tell me..
.. that life can be rough..
..if you're not gonna be smart.. my son
.. then you better be tough.
I wish sometimes it could be different
I wish I wasn’t bent this way
To shut my mouth and not be flippant
Well, I guess that’ll be the day.
So here I am all flat and busted
A character in a one act play
A man no longer to be trusted
A man who’s often gone astray.
My daddy used to tell me..
.. that life can be rough..
..if you're not gonna be smart.. my son
.. then you better be tough. James
