It had to happen....
my external USB hard drive with all my audio files crashed today  Undecided
It isn't recognized by my pc any more and the only noise it makes is tick,tick,....
And of course no backup..

I lost around 700 self made samples, I still have a backup of the raw recordings but all treatment and splitting of the samples in single samples are lost.

And nobody has to repeat that I'm an idiot, I know it.
Remaking my sample library will take months

OUCH

Are there any computer experts over there that can retrieve data from a crashed drive?  Sometimes that is possible.  Sometimes you can take apart the USB drive and install the drive as a slave drive on a desktop and get at the files.  That depends of course on where the crash took place on the platter(s).

Good luck.

Sure but do you have an idea of rates they ask  Roll Eyes Wink
I'll take it apart myself tomorrow and see what the problem is.
It will probably be limited to that, i don't expect to be able to repair it.

I'm sure you (an Azel) can to a good enough job of beating you about over this so...

Remove the actual drive from the case and see if its an IDE, sata or mini (laptop) IDE drive.
Connect it in appropriate LINUX laptop or desktop.
Create a new directory such as /home/Rony/junk
Use gparted just to mount the drive partitions one at a time to this location, then your normal file browser to just copy anything you find to a safe location.

This has worked for me a few times with a defunct Windows drives.

We may have a solution, here...

Thanks Will for your advise
I've tried it but with no success. The drive didn't crash, it simple doesn't turn any more, something wrong with the motor that doesn't spin up any more. I've opened it and can see that it doesn't turn any more.
So it's definitely died.

Well the good news is that I found a backup of my samples on my linux PC, I don't even remember that I made this backup Smiley
After all I'm a bit less an idiot that I thought Wink

I did lose all the mappings and presets for my sampler, so have to redo this, but at least i have all the samples, a lot of those samples are from older hardware I don't have any more.
Looks like I will be very busy for the next months, recreating mappings and presets.

I've lost a couple of songs also, but that's not a disaster....

Glad to hear it's not quite a s bad as you first thought and you got most of your stuff backed up.

I admit I'm really paranoid about this. I have copies of all my audio work on two quite separate machines, and about one a month backup the entire audio partitions to DVDs.

Glad to hear you found some again Kara!
I'm with Folderol, I back up to 2 external HD's, DVD and my most essential stuff also on 2 USB sticks, its a drag sometimes making sure that everythings back-upped but better to be on the safe side... Smiley

Hey kara, I've managed to recover files from a crashed hard drive once in my lifetime.
I wish I could do something to help here (though my drive was not external).
Maybe you could take your EHD to a good computer service store where they probably can recover your files....

Peter,

I work for an IT company  Undecided
A technician had a look at it today.
It's actually not crashed, the mechanism that let the plates spin is broken.
To repair it has to be taken apart completely, find the right parts and reassemble it, align the heads, etc,etc...

Not a case for normal IT technicians but for specialists.
It will cost to much to repair it....
And since I have a backup of my samples, I won't pay that money for it.
The only things I've lost are a couple of songs, which we can always redo
