I spent the 80s and a good chunk of the 90s trying (and failing) to get my stuff published, so I can well understand the frustration.

These days I don't bother. I post in places like here, and gain valuable support, suggestions & collaborations. I also maintain my own website so people get to hear what I'm about - which is the main thing for me.

P.S.
I find that hearing what everyone else is doing has broadened my own tastes

That's a perfect way to describe what I do now as well. It's nice to hear I'm not along in this....lol. We just keep on writing for anyone willing to listen. I figure, if one person like one of my songs, then it was worth it.
