Some of the singers, players, and performers I've come across over the years have
completely eclipsed mediocre talents like we see heavily promoted in the media. It's actually embarrassing to witness the latest flavour-of-the-month entertainer rising to stardom when some guy down the street who waits tables in a restaurant can sing/play circles around them.
Fortunately, we now have the web and computer audio production so those who have no taste for the limelight can still make their music and be heard.
