 Shocked
Well ..... Industrial ....  Shocked

I know nothing at all about this genre, so I did some research, looked at all sorts of stuff on the 'tube' and decided that it's the biggest load of **** since punk, which I didn't like either.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Then someone mentioned hitting copper-bottom pans for a percussion style ... and I remembered ...  Shocked
my old buddy, Wyatt, did this for me a couple of years back  Kiss

So I dug out his 'copper pan' track and twisted it a bit, then invented a 'sub-genre' which could be called Industr-neo-tradeunion-protest.

Lyrics:
In the year that I left school – 1965
There were only a few ways for a boy to survive
One was to let them drop you 1600 feet down a hole
Where you spend all your days in the darkness hewing coal.

Another way to do it was to send you on the river
Hot as hell in summer and in winter you would shiver
Chipping slag from welded seams and riveting the hulls
The grinders smoothing off the plates reverberates through skulls.

For me was an apprenticeship, Industrial it’s true
The hammer peel, the cold hard steel, the hacksaw cutting through
Five long years to learn your trade, that was the deal
Then you were a journeyman – the end of the ordeal.

Then came Maggie Thatcher
Stealing all the jobs
Closing down the coal mines
Shutting the ship yards
Clearing out the steel works
Selling off the trains
Privatising everything
Flushing lives down the drains.

(plus : extract of ‘The Mechanics Chorus’, from Rossini’s Welder of Seville)

I can definitely identify with the words Sad
I hope that doesn't make me a 'domestic activist' in the current Plod terminology  Tongue

Again, I'll have a listen when I've made a final decision about entering myself.

Words are great, but I just can't get on with the rest at all - sorry Cry

Full marks for attempting something so totally alien though Lips Sealed

 Cool
Thanks for listening, Will.
I know exactly what you mean, mate.

There are only two things that actually made me do this.
One was the fact that I was reminded of that 'pan' track which Wyatt did for me, and I thought this would be a suitable use for it.  Kiss
The other was the fact that I did have that apprenticeship in industry. As you probably know yourself, working in an engineering environment in the 60's was an experience all of it's own. In the days of 5 year apprenticeships the first year was solely to do with the down to earth practices of learning the old hand-tools. The second year was taken up with learning how to interact with the 'men' ... i.e. making the tea and sweeping up  Roll Eyes
I somehow thought that I could convey a part of this in a tongue-in-cheek manner  Lips Sealed

Truth be told ... I can't listen to this stuff any more than you can ... and I certainly won't get to the voting stage.  Huh

This song is a riot!

Just change a few words and you have the same scenario over on this side of the pond!

Great job here James.
