... and here is the delightfully named 'Hole of Horcum'
The first picture gives you an idea of the overall scale. Just above the foreground trees, slightly to the right are two black dots - people
I've walked right down there , past the tiny red dot in the centre of the picture (an old shepherds cottage).
The second picture is from beyond the cottage looking back. Can you imagine what it was like living there in the middle of winter? The line of trees in the distance mark the edge of a very busy road (and car park) which was my starting point. The shape and size of the 'hole' is such that you hear no traffic noise at all.
Legend has it that the hole was created by the devil when he scooped out a lump of earth to throw at a bothersome angel, and here's the third picture to show his finger-marks
That's the same line of trees, but viewed from the (very steep) path that climbs out of the hole. The indistinct white blob is the National Trust information centre and is about the size of a large mobile home.
