Who? Me?

Sorry I've been rather absent lately - pressure of work mostly, but also more family events, so it sort of balances. This last week I've been on holiday in North Yorkshire again. It was a much needed break, but unfortunately only the first day was really good weather, so, for the rest of the week I spent much of the time visiting ancient stately homes and castles. As I'm a National Trust member, I get into a lot of these free of charge.

Here are some photos for your amusement. These first are of Tattershall castle, which I visited on the way up to Yorkshire. As you can see, it is built almost entirely of brick. The second picture gives some idea of the thickness of the walls, and the last is the top floor battlements.

... and here is the delightfully named 'Hole of Horcum' Smiley
The first picture gives you an idea of the overall scale. Just above the foreground trees, slightly to the right are two black dots - people Smiley

I've walked right down there , past the tiny red dot in the centre of the picture (an old shepherds cottage).

The second picture is from beyond the cottage looking back. Can you imagine what it was like living there in the middle of winter? The line of trees in the distance mark the edge of a very busy road (and car park) which was my starting point. The shape and size of the 'hole' is such that you hear no traffic noise at all.

Legend has it that the hole was created by the devil when he scooped out a lump of earth to throw at a bothersome angel, and here's the third picture to show his finger-marks Smiley

That's the same line of trees, but viewed from the (very steep) path that climbs out of the hole. The indistinct white blob is the National Trust information centre and is about the size of a large mobile home.

Very quaint and charming photos of a mystical and absolutely beautiful area of England...very nice! Cheesy Very reminiscent of some of the locales of New Zealand I had scene in the behind the scenes footage of my Lord Of The Rings DVD's.
Incidentally...there's a small town about 30 minutes south from me called Smithville, which is an historic area and in the town square, there's a specialty shop that has some British merchandise.Nice area it is,but not nearly as pretty as North Yorkshire. Smiley

Enjoyed the photos thoroughly, thanks for sharing!
