One of our staff at the Victoria hostel is a violin player, and we have also had a classically trained concert violinist from the Czech Republic staying with us for several weeks.
So, I contacted a friend who likes to keep a selection of instruments on hand, and he agreed to sell me a violin he had purchased from a traveler  some years ago. Information on the web tells me it is hand-carved from maple and spruce, and conforms to all the basic requirements that defines a quality instrument.
75 bucks later, I took the fiddle to the hostel, learned how to set it up and tune it (from youtube), and our Czech guest was kind enough to put it through its paces. Her own violin is a vintage item built in 1926, and she tells me this puppy actually compares very favourably to it. The sound is quite spectacular - due, in no small part, to her playing skills...
